Adjustable shelving added to storage cupboard

The project:

This cupboard had plenty of potential but wasn't making the best use of the space, it felt more like a labyrith and of course was old and not neaat/clean. We have a daughter and obviously rotation toys we try to keep.

We wanted a storage solution that was practical for everyday family life while still feeling beautiful and organised. By adding adjustable shelving, we created a flexible storage cupboard that can evolve as our family's needs change :)

It now stores books, toys, puzzles, craft supplies and seasonal items in an organised way, helping keep the rest of the home calm and clutter-free.

- Materials:

• Timber battens
• Timber screws
• MDF shelving 18mm
• wood filler
• Paint: Benjamin Moore Natural Cream, equalised in TAUBMANS low sheen
• SATIN finish (transparent) for shelves and trims/doors
• Clear storage containers
• Wicker baskets
• Fabric sheets storage bins
• Labels

Most of the storage - organisation items I have found them at KMART and will upgrade little by little :)

- Tools:

• Tape measure

• Pencil

• Spirit level

• Drill / Driver

• Circular saw or table saw

• Screwdriver

• Sandpaper

• Vacuum

- Step 1:

I took all measurements 3 times and started sketching, then uploading all infos to chatgpt to start visualise - get a render - have 2 - 3 different calculations for best use of space asking questions on general size, general size for puzzles, boxes etc

I wanted to have a gift paper storage on the inside of the door but had to leave this for another storage - otherwise this depth would not have been enough for value of this storage

- Step 2:

emptied cupboard! Remove everything from the cupboard and clean all surfaces so you can accurately measure and plan the layout.

- Step 3:

Cut to measurements - saw shelves and WOOD supports

Install the shelf supports and fit the adjustable shelves, checking each one with a spirit level to ensure everything was perfectly straight.

- Step 4:

start painting! I painted the inside walls, doors and trims with primer,

same for all the boards and wood support. After this I promised myself I would never paint again as it felt like 250 years

- Step 5:

Install in!! this took so much time as we measures again on the wall to make sure the space was equalised btw shelves. We left some space for cables as we aim to install LEDS in this storage later :)

- Step 6:

I then painted again!! After we filled all holes from screwing on all trims, we decided to also add support at the front

- Step 7:

I finished with the transparent satin finsih twice on all shelves and trims, and doors. Added some nice handles to the doors - I am aiming to add longer ones and awaiting their arrival.

I went to Kmart with my 3 yo to get all storage compartments which I honestly wouldnt recommend 😂 we had a great time nonetheless.

I got a rotating storage for all pens, pencils sissors etc.

I got drawers for the wooden puzzles

They also sell bed sheets organsiers (upper left) with labels.

Magazise separator is awesome to organise colouring books, sticker books, learning books

I picked the bigger transparent open boxes with rollers for the bottom, tehse are awesome for the magnet tiles, lego, duplo etc - we are working on the lighting today.

This looks brilliant. You've made great use of the available space and the whole area looks so much tidier and more organised than what was there before.

The combination of shelving, tubs and baskets gives everything its own place while still keeping it easy to access. It's a simple but really effective storage solution and a fantastic improvement to the space.
