I have read the previous answers but I am stuck at getting the flush valve out.. any suggestions. The clips at the front were easy to set free but the back ones won't move, even with a screwdriver to pry them out and up..

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
It sounds like you might not have disconnected the flush pipe nut at the base of the cistern. On the underside of the cistern there should be a nut that resembles this https://www.bunnings.com.au/kinetic-pvc-flush-pipe-ring-and-nut_p4920281 . I'd loosen off that nut and try again.

From my meager toilet experience - you should be able to unhook that square looking plunger column. Once you do this that bridging plastic should come off. You're having issues with this - try WD40 prior. Once out you should be able to rotate counterclockwise the lower end to reveal the seating washer. Lots of 'shoulds.'
Replace.
Are you absolutely sure @BarbaraBlinco this is the problem - not the inlet valve seen on the left?
