How to fix corner lifting of patch kit?

hi!

I’ve used the repair wall kit to patch some small holes on the ceiling from the old lights.
but when the filler dried, some of the corners of the aluminium lifted. I’ve sand it back the best I can. What can I do to salvage this? If I remove it, will it rip the ceiling?

Thank you for sharing your question about your wall repair. I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to patch a plaster wall. You will notice that the amount of plaster used was enough to cover the surface of the repair patch and was only lightly sanded so that the surface of the patch is not seen. Looking at your patch, it is still possible to add a layer of filler to cover the surface. Your goal is to apply a wide patch so that it blends in with the ceilings level. It's not ideal to create a tall patch as it will be noticeable. Once the filler cures, I recommend sanding lightly so as not to reach the patch level. Your goal is to have a smooth surface.

:) "more is less" in this case. Every time I have repaired a hole or put up plaster sheets I have always made the mistake of trying to loose less plaster to save myself from sanding. And every time I end up going back and adding more. You want a smooth transition so the eyes done really see it. And probably a reasonable amount of redo's to start with. Smooth coat over the lot, let it dry and then another coat to fill the holes if needed.

With the metal plates you can see on your ceiling, plus the repair mesh I agree with @EricL to apply another coat. Im generally not a fan of the steel patch and must admit I havnt used any before. The tape that shows is why I would add another coat as it means the first coat was a little thin.

Sweep up the plaster dust after sanding and dont use your vacuum cleaner :) It will kill it. I found using Rocket Plaster Board Sanding Mesh - 4 Pack to really work well. I used Paint Partner Hand Sander to hold the sand paper.

I’ll try to lay it thick tomorrow. But how do I avoid a mountain over the patch ?

I suggest starting with a low fill first and slowly working your way across the patch. You may need a larger spreader such as the https://www.bunnings.com.au/pro-renovator-100mm-plastic-scraper_p1660095 or similar in order to apply a large uniform fill.

The issue is that you simply haven't applied nearly enough of the supplied base coat. Use this product if you have run out and apply it with the scraper @EricL suggested. You need a couple of mm coverage over the repair section and feather out the edges well past. Roughly guessing by the photos, the total coverage would be around 150-200mm. Allow 24hrs to dry before sanding.

I wouldn't use a mesh sander as they can be too efficient when you haven't used them before. For repair work I personally use 180G paper on a cork block lightly in a circular motion working centrally outwards, moving to 240G to finish off. Though you will feel the bump of the thick central part of the repair, you shouldn't feel any lip on the out part where it meets the original ceiling surface.

Just showing what too little plaster shows upm have a look at the very bottom of this project when I was joining two sheets of plaster. You can see I was going for less plaster to save from sanding but its counterintuitive. Having more down over a wider area smooths out the bumps (hills) that you may be worried about. Kinda like a long slow rise and then down.

Sorry I have no experience with aluminium patches. To me, unless there was a concave in the gyprock, I would have sanded lightly the nine holes, gap-filled them with a spatula, wait till dried then sand and paint.
