There is so many different tomatoes to choose from - what do you rate the best for salads ??š
Where are you basedĀ @3012paul? And where do you plan on growing them - in a pot, in a vegetable garden, on a balcony? And most importantly, what types of tomatoes do you most like to eat?
I like Roma for salads. It's also pretty easy to grow as its a smaller plant that can be grown in pots and doesn't tend to need as much staking.Ā
As an all-rounder, I'd look atĀ Grosse Lisse.
Have a look at Tommy Toe -Ā https://www.bunnings.com.au/mr-fothergill-s-tommy-toe-tomato-heirloom-seeds_p2960670
Ideal for salads andĀ considered the best tasting tomato according to the Gourmet Taste Test in Victoria.
@Isobel, I like the sound of those Tommy Toes, I must give them a try. š
I've had success with Cherry Tomatoes (the shrub version) in grow bags, but these in the link below could be a great starting point for those new to growing their own, or with limited space:

Great to see plenty of helpful suggestions.
Please let us know what you chooseĀ @3012paul. We'd also love to shots of your harvest down the track!
Jason
I've now got my tomatoes in, along with some carrots and cucumber.Ā
On my window sill - hopefully the start of something delicious!
I should have also mentionedĀ @3012paulĀ that its a good idea to plant a few at a time over the next month so you get a continuous supply of fruit over summer and early autumn rather than all at once.Ā
My top tip is to ensure you water evenly, otherwise the fruit can split just as its about to ripen. It can happen when there's a dry period, and then heavy rain, which is common in summer so you do need to hand water regularly.Ā
How are everyone's tomatoes growing?
My tomatoes are going great guns @Jason. I usually plant all my vegies from seed but this year I cheated just a tiny bit and bought 3 tomato seedlings which helped me get a head start. The ones I bought were Apollo, Mighty Red and Grosse Lisse which are pictured in the tomato cages but I also sowed Roma and yellow pear as well as a "mystery" cherry tomato which our son saved seeds from some store bought tomatoes. We call those ones "surprise" tomatoes.Ā š
Now that the danger of frosts is over I have removed the plastic tree guards and surrounded them with a 4-sided tomato cage.
I also have some Grosse Lisse and Siberian tomatoesĀ which are in "air pruning" pots which will be planted out this week. These pots help develop strong root growth and prevents root circling.

As always, your post is enlightening, & fun. š
I'm dead keen to hear how your son's mystery seeds go, the ones that he rescued from store bought tomatoes. I'm not sure of where I heard it, but there's a suggestion that they're genetically modified, & can't be resown. š
I will keep you updated on the progress of the "mystery" tomatoes @Andy_Mann. I am also curious as to what they are and if they do fruit, what they taste like. Our son said that the reason that he saved the seeds was because his wife LOVED them. I had to laugh though - he brought them to me and asked ME to grow them............
They look really healthy. Well doneĀ @Annette. Looking forward to seeing your harvest.
Great to see so many Workshop members who plan on growing tomatoes this year. Our latest poll suggests over 70 percent of community members will be plantingĀ tomatoes this Spring.
Thanks to all members who voted in the poll.
Please keep the tips and questions coming.
