Sooty mould on lemon tree
I got an email from the Yates Gardening Club today that reminded me about the sooty mould I used to have on my lemon tree. It looked like this: If you ever see this kind of black ash on your citrus leaves or lots of ants, make sure you tackle the problem. It's caused by scale insects which are sap suckers and will likely…

Do you think clover should be killed off?
Hi everyone. I recently Googled for tips to kill off the clover on my lawn after not having great success in previous years with off-the-shelf products. I was surprised to read that some people think it actually helps the lawn, offering nitrogen and keeping other weeds down. It’s also apparently good for bees. What do you…

Feed your citrus trees everyone
Hi all, Just wanted to post a reminder to feed your citrus trees at the moment. The likes of lemons and limes are really hungry at the start of spring. It's especially important for trees you have in pots and will set you up for plenty of fruit.

Common household objects that have now disappeared
I saw one of these the other day - a real blast from the past... It made me start to think about some of the things that you'd once find in every house but now have disappeared. What are some of your nominations?

Robot that weeds the garden for you
Love the sound of this! It's from the creator of Roomba - the robot vacuum. This one scurries around the garden and chops weeds for you. There's more info at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rorymackean/tertill-the-solar-powered-weeding-robot-for-home-g

Do your pets sleep indoors?
The nights are starting to get colder at our place, which means its time for the annual discussion (fight) about whether the dog can sleep indoors. Do your pets sleep indoors? Why or why not? Hopefully I'll get some advice that can turn the discussion in my favour at home...

Keyless locks
We are thinking about replacing our front door, so I was browsing deadlocks and see there’s now some keyless options that use fingerprints, cards and keypads. Anyone got any first-hand experience with these? It would be great not to have loads of keys to carry around, especially when I quickly pop down to the shops or go…

What are your must-have plants in a garden?
I imagine there wouldn't be too many backyards without a lemon tree. What do you think are other musts for the average Australian garden?

Composting cannon
Anyone tried these composting cannons? Very cheap and look like a great alternative to having a large compost bin or making your own with pvc pipe. You can compost direct in the garden bed or even a pot. The cylinders are cardboard and breakdown over a few months.

Gall wasp infested tree in green waste?

Regrow spring onions
Did you know you can regrow spring onions? Even those you buy from the store? When you cut them, leave the roots and about 1-2cm of the white stalk. Pop them into a container with a little bit of water making sure the stem is out of the water. In a few days the onion should start to grow again. Once you have some growth,…
