How to stain new treated Pine decking?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your questions about your pine decking.

Pine is a natural product that often behaves differently when treated with preservatives. Discolouration sometimes happens, I propose cleaning the timber deck with Cabot's 1L Deck Clean. However, I strongly recommend testing an off-cut or independent piece before committing the whole deck.

Hi @daveom,

It appears that you've ended up with products from two different batches. As my colleague has mentioned, this could be due to different reactions to the treatment or different treatments. Our range of treated Pine decking is either ACQ or LOSP treated. These treatments are excellent and have the same purpose but can have distinct colour variations. I would recommend returning the product and picking up lengths all from the same batch and pack. If these lengths were all from the same pack, I'd be happy to contact the store for you to ensure our team members assist in locating similar stock.

Hi Mitchell, Thanks for replying. Unfortunately before I realised that the decking was two different colours I cut them to size. It was only when I test coloured the boards that I realised that they were probably from two different batches. Not sure now what recourse I have.

Thank you very much for posting those beautiful photos of your finished decking project. The Swan Jarrah River stain worked so well with the pine panels. You're curving flowing cut along the side of the pool is really impressive. Would it be possible for you to share how you accomplished such a flawless pattern cut on your decking panels? Any other information you can share about the build would be highly appreciated.

Thanks Eric for those kind words. I regards to the cuts around the pool. Most of them were pretty straight angle cuts. there were a couple of tricky ones which i will admit required a couple of attempts. I just carefully measured the angles i needed to cut and cut those angles with my jigsaw. I was really impressed with the colour of the Swan River Jarrah. My wife and I tried a lot of sample pots before settling on the Jarrah. The deck is screwed down with stainless steel 50mm screws. We are very happy with the result. Thanks again to all the Bunnings staff who assisted me through the process.

Hi there

I’m interested in this and the outcome? We’ve similarly ordered and received treated pine decking and have attempted to stain it because a number of the planks are green. We’ve used Cabot’s water based stain in Beach house grey (one coat) and the planks are still white/pine colour and green so we’re not sure what to do now or how to not have green planks?!

Have you seasoned your pine decking or have you applied any of the decking cleaner and prep such as Cabot's 2L New Timber Prep. If your decking timber has not been prepared or seasoned properly, any coating placed on top will either not be effective or will fail to penetrate the timber panel.

Seasoning also known as weathering is when your timber decking has been left out in the weather for around 6 to 12 weeks uncoated. This allows the tannins and trapped oils in the timber to drain out and allow the timber surface to dry off. You then apply the prep cleaner to the surface and wait for your deck to dry off, then you can start staining the surface.

Allow me to give Cabot's a call regarding your situation, technically the stain has to be washed or removed somehow to allow the timber decking to breath and weather naturally. As soon as we have more information on what steps to take, we'll get back to you.

Sorry, to hear you've experienced an issue with staining your deck.

Treated Pine decking can be quite green in colour due to the treatment. As my colleague @EricL has mentioned, you'll need to let it naturally weather in order for the green tint to diminish. At this stage, it would be best to scrub the deck down with Cabot's 2L New Timber Prep to remove as much of the stain as possible. Once removed, you can let the deck weather for around 12 weeks before re-coating. By that stage, the green tinge should have reduced significantly, allowing the stain to be more effective.

We didn’t weather it first because our research said that only treated pine that hasn’t been kiln dried needs to be left to dry, but otherwise it can be stained immediately. As Bunnings website says what we ordered had been kiln dried we assumed we were ok to proceed with our project.

Oh well. We will see what we can do.
