How to fix crack in porcelain basin?

Hi there, hope someone can help! I noticed a crack in the porcelain basin, and am trying to figure out if it dates from before I started renting here or afterwards. I know epoxy is often used to fill such cracks. My question: is the white colour inside the crack - which mismatches with the surrounding basin - evidence that someone has already applied white epoxy to the crack? Or is that the colour of the exposed under-layer once cracked? Grateful for any advice!

While I'm not an expert in identifying whether a crack has been previously filled, in my experience with surface repairs, this does look like a crack that may have had some kind of white touch-up applied—whether that’s epoxy, porcelain repair compound, or even just paint—to try and mask the darker under-layer beneath the glazed surface.

Porcelain itself can sometimes be white underneath, but the way the lighter material sits within the finer parts of the crack does suggest that something may have been added after the fact. It’s quite common for people to apply a white filler or touch-up to make a crack less visible.

If you've only just noticed it, it's possible it’s been there since before your tenancy and has either become more noticeable over time or slightly worsened. That said, without knowing its full history, it's difficult to say with certainty when the damage occurred.

I agree with Mitchell as it is difficult to tell when it actually happened, and it does appear that something was applied to the crack. However, I hope the suggested repair procedures in the article work well for you.
