How to open jammed nut and access the washer?

The tap spindle  isn't moving even after using a wrench and tap spanner..I even tried wd 40 but it has not moved.

Any helpful tips about how to get the spindle out to replace valve and fix leaking tap.

Kind regards

Morning @Sunie

I've stopped using the above - and now only using closed spanners on vanities.

Better leverage.

Better fit.

Less chance of burring/rounding the brass.

Worth a try?

Re: How to Open the Jammed Nut and access the washer

Hi @Sunie,

As @Noyade has mentioned, a combination spanner might be your best choice to get a good grasp on the spindle.

As you've already tried WD40 without any luck, the next thing I would try is percussive force while rotating the spanner. Grab a hammer and tap the spindle while rotating the spanner. This percussive force might help to break up whatever is locking the spindle in position.

If this is not successful, the next thing I would try is heating the spindle's thread with a heat gun. Heat can often help seized threads open up. If you were to use this method, please be aware that heat guns will get extremely hot, so make sure you wear gloves and are not aiming them at things that are likely to crack from thermal expansion. You should also note that the heat gun has the potential to melt rubber o-rings and thread tape, so if this does happen, they would need to be replaced.

If you are still not successful, you will likely have to contact a plumber for their assistance.

Let me know what you think, and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: How to Open the Jammed Nut and access the washer

Hi @Sunie,

@Noyade's idea of using a ring spanner and @JacobZ a hair dryer is the way to go.

There are three cans in my tool kit:

RP7/CRC

Butane torch

Freeze spray

Heat with hair dryer and if that doesn't work then using a butane torch carefully lick around with a soft flame and if still no-go immediately after heating chill the spindle with Freeze spray.

Google 'coefficient of thermal expansion' for interesting reading

Let us know and good luck
