How to replace toilet wax ring?

Hi!

In our past house we had a sewage smell which the plumber said was a worn out waxed ring seal.

We have since bought a new (old) house, and I’ve got the same problem in my ensuite.

To save me getting the plumber if it’s a DIY job (I’m happy to do this), can someone please talk me through it for my specific toilet (see photos)?

Please let me know everything I need to buy from Bunnings so I can give it a crack and see if this solves it.

thanks in advance!

Re: Replacing toilet wax ring

Hi @ElaineBenes,

The toilet you have shown does not use a wax ring as a seal; it uses a PVC Pan Collar, which is glued into the sewage pipe that is coming through the floor. It is possible to replace the Rubber Pan Collar, but it would require you to disconnect the toilet so it can be lifted, allowing you to remove the old collar and slip the new one into place.

My colleagues have detailed the process in the discussion Broken seal on top of wax ring.

As they have mentioned, it would be best to check your local plumbing regulations, as there is a good chance this repair needs to be carried out by a licensed plumber.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
