Alfresco wall for privacy and weather protection

Designed to look part of the original layout, this alfresco extension is well insulated and provides both privacy and protection from the elements.

The project

We have enclosed a corner of our alfresco to help keep the weather out and make it a bit more private. We will also be putting cupboards and a bench through here too.

I made the frame out of 90 x 35 treated Pine. If you are doing something like this, make sure you use H4 Pine for the bottom plate of the wall frame.

Once the frames were made, I stood them up and bolted them into the concrete. The bugle screwed them into the wall/posts/beams.

I then wrapped the frame with the blue builders wrap and began cladding. I used the same cladding as the rest of the house to match it all in.

This side of the house gets all the afternoon sun, so I also insulated this wall before lining the inside. Plus, I put some blocking and wiring in for a TV/sound bar. All I used to line the wall was 4.5mm fibre cement sheeting.

And lastly, was paint.

To look at it you would never know it was added on.

As you said "To look at it you would never know it was added on" and you nailed it. I like how you have insulated the wall and put in extra studds for different sized tvs ect. Forward planning is something I think makes a lot of sense!. The way you have made that whole are flow into each other really works.

May I ask, is 'blue builders wrap' an insulation? Also, the H4 reference about the bottom beam; is H4 stronger than the timber used for the rest of the frame?

I'm sure @Baggs will get back to you shortly, but I may be able to assist in the interim.

Blue builders wrap is referring to a product such as this Ametalin 1370mm x 30m VapourTech Brane VHP Vapour Permeable Wall Insulation which is used on the outside of structural frames when timber houses are built. It acts both as an insulative material and a vapour barrier to help prevent both liquid and heat transfer from the outside of the property in.

H4 timber refers to the type of treatment applied to the timber which makes it usable in direct contact with concrete.

Pretty much what @JacobZ said really. the wrap is to stop water/moisture penetration to the timber as the cladding will absorb moister plus it gives a little extra insulation.

The H4 timber handles moisture a lot better.
