Brick pillars transformed with hardwood cladding

Merbau boards of varying widths transformed dated brick pillars into a warm, inviting entryway.

The project

When I moved into my home the front facade was dated, with lifeless cream brick pillars and light cream panelling around the window. The lights on the pillars were rusted and gave little to no light.

To give the front facade a new look and bring some life and "pop" to the colour scheme, I first painted the panelling around the window in Dulux Colorbond Jasper to match the downpipes and guttering around the house.

I then decided to clad the front pillars and replace the light fittings. I painted the pillars with Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat in Domino, removed the old light fittings and attached horizontal battens around each pillar for the Merbau boards to attach to.

I used 90mm x 19mm Merbau decking boards to clad the pillars. I cut the boards into thick and thin pieces, alternating around each pillar, leaving just enough space in between each board to bring out the Domino paint from behind.

To finish the look, I replaced the light fittings with Bunnings' Brilliant Black Manoir exterior wall lights.

I'm absolutely loving the new facade and how the pillars have been transformed from drab to fab.

The natural finish of the timber has certainly added to the street appeal, but most importantly it's just so inviting and welcoming.

Just Starting Out

May i know how you fixed the boards to the pillars? Did you directly screwed them to the bricks?

Hello @iamafreak,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us and thank you for sharing your question about the hardwood cladding.

Let me tag @DKG to make them aware of your question. From an installation point of view, it would technically be more practical to have a frame going around the post. In that manner, it will be easier to line up and screw in the Merbau panels. Whereas if you were to install the timber directly to the brick it would be difficult to keep them in line.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
