The project

We had a design in mind and contacted the Bunnings kitchen design team, who modified it to fit our space perfectly and gave us some great ideas.

In particular, they modified our bench space so that we could build in our wine fridges while still giving us plenty of storage space.

We ordered raw board for the doors and panels so we could paint our own cabinetry. We painted the cabinets with Porter's Paints Explorer Blue and then sealed all surfaces. We also added some inverted picture rail to the top of the cabinetry to give it a little bit more of a country look.

With the cabinet doors I used a primer, sealer and undercoat as the first coat. Once I had added a coat of paint, and while the paint was still wet, I ran the brush down in one stroke from to the top to the bottom of each surface so that any brush marks were going the same way. It then dried beautifully flat so there were no brush marks at all. I love that paint – it's fantastic to work with and has a lovely creamy finish.

For larger areas, such as the ends of the island bench, I used a small roller and then went over it with a brush to remove the stippled look of the rolled paint.

The door and drawer handles are the Asidrama brand. I had seen them online a long time ago when we first started talking about a new kitchen and fell in love with them. They're the brushed satin nickel version.

We put everything together and installed it ourselves and we love it!
