As part of a Queenslander renovation, 40 panes of glass were replaced in this teenage girls bedroom makeover along with new paint, curtains, mirror and shelving.

The project

Queenslander renovation in Brisbane. Bedroom created for my 15-year-old daughter. Project involved restoring all windows by hand, including reglazing with rose coloured glass, as well as paint, curtains, mirror and shelves.

Steps

Step 1

Photo before. This was taken by the real estate during the sale before I bought the house. It does not show how terrible the walls and windows were, but you can still tell its old.

Step 2

Patched and sanded walls, they were terrible as the house had been a rental property for a decade.
Silicon cracked skirting boards and around window and door frames. Painted; ceiling - flat white, walls - snowy mountains half, skirting boards and doors - oil enamel white.

Step 3

Electrician replaced oyster light with ceiling fan.

Step 4

Hung mirror.

Step 5

Now the hard part - windows! Removed all eight windows and sanded frames and sills. This part took several days. Chiseled out putty and removed glass. There are 40 panes of glass in this bedroom! Took primed frames to glazier and had new glass cut. I choose Pink Florentine to both restore the charm of the house and give my daughter a beautiful rose hue inside her room. Puttied all glass into the frames. Installed new matt black hinges.
Installed windows into sills which is pretty hard to do alone. FYI (I would recommend finding help on this step).

Installed polished brass window hardware.

Step 6

Curtains. Bought off-the-roll material from Spotlight and hemmed to size. Installed curtain rod at ceiling height to create a feeling of flow and depth.

Step 7

Windows when finished.
