This stunning dining table is made from salvaged Oregon fascia beams and welded tube steel.

The project

A good mate of mine pulled these fascia beams off an old house and asked if I could turn them into a dining table.

The glue-up was challenging with the timber only being 30mm thick, so I ended up gluing the planks in separate sections. I had to biscuit the lengths and I also put a brace underneath to add more strength.

The legs were welded together with 50mm x 100mm tube steel.

There are two different methods I use to fill cracks, knots and nail holes: epoxy resin and wood putty.

The epoxy I’ve been using is called West System. The ratio is five parts resin to one part hardener. It's clear but I also have a little bottle of black pigment paste that makes it black.

Practice makes perfect, and it may take a few refills as the resin tends to soak into the timber and small voids.

Wood putty comes in a variety of colours to match the timber you're using. This is great for small cracks and nail or screw holes because it dries within the hour, depending on temperature, and then it can be sanded back with a sander. With epoxy the drying time can be more than 10 hours.

Once everything was sanded well, I applied Osmo Polyx clear satin oil, which works wonders with hardwoods and also with Oregon.

I had been wanting  to make my first dining table for a while. I'm looking forward to my next one.
