This large built-in unit made of five Montgomery bookcases brings a bright new look and loads of display space to a dated rumpus room.

The project

We saw a built-in bookcase like this on Pinterest and decided to give it a go!

Our downstairs rumpus room had been in need of some TLC for a very long time. The bookcases on the left had come from another house and were uneven, covered in nails and not overly functional. The room was a bit dingy (and probably still will be until we replace the carpet and lights) so I painted the wood-panelled wall and started on the bookcase.

We used five Montgomery 80cm x 28cm x 202 cm six-tier bookcases, which we assembled and bolted together. Once they were bolted to the wall we got to work framing them in.

We popped in some supports and then attached the timber to that. Our house is not square so we literally moved a wall to make it flush! We finished it off with a quick sand and some paint.

I'm pretty stoked with how it has turned out. I am trying to decide whether we fill in the holes for the shelves and paint the inside of the bookcase or leave the holes there so we can move shelves around.
