Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members.

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.

  • Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include MelaminePlywood and MDF.

Does this service have a cost?

Bunnings stores may charge a small fee for timber cutting. The price is:

  • Timber docking - First two cuts are free, and 50 cents per additional cut

  • Panels and sheeting - First cut is free and $1 per additional cut.

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:

  • Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer

  • Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home?

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Most stores offer same day or next day service. Please contact your nearest store for details.

Please feel free to let me know if you have further questions about our helpful timber cutting service.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hi, can I ask, is there somewhere I can see online all the wood you have in stock? The normal online catalogue doesn't appear to be complete, I've previously found some wood on the shelf that isn't on the site. I'm particularly looking for spotted gum sleepers, slabs, or decking.

Also, are you able to do do things like joinery or just straight cuts?

How straight will the cuts be? Will I need to do additional cutting and/or sanding to use it for small woodworking projects (e.g., small drawer)?

Hello @Sienna,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. Thank you for joining us and sharing your question about timber stock.

One of the best ways to be sure that the store has stock is to give them a call. To be really sure, kindly ask the team member to do a physical check of the stock. The team member will then go to the location of the item and see that it is actually present at the store. This gives you the guarantee that the computer has confirmed the stock is present and a team member has seen it in the racks.

The saw at the stores are set up for straight cuts. However, these are large shop saws with very large blades that are not set up for fine cuts. Some sanding may be necessary to remove rough edges and slightly off-angle cuts.

There is always the option of cutting it yourself. If you are planning more D.I.Y down the road this would be an excellent opportunity to learn about circular saws. This will also serve as a starting point for you to build up your tool chest.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

I want to make a set of wall shelves out of Bunning’s Pine wood. Can Bunnings cut the timber to a tapered edge (30 degrees or 45 degrees)?

Thank you!

Hello @XD

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. Thank you so much for joining us and sharing your question about cutting timber.

The shop saws are currently set up for straight cuts only. I'm so sorry but they are not able to cut complex or miter cuts on timber. However, there are options for you to join the shelves together. You can simply butt-join the panels and use a Carinya 97 x 20 x 2mm Zinc Mending Plate - 4pk to give you a flat shelf. If you are after a seamless join you can use Timbermate 250g Natural Wood Filler to fill in the join before painting.

Your other option is to cut the panel yourself. D.I.Y. is a journey of self-discovery. I suggest getting some timber offcuts and practice cutting some angled cuts. Dozens of online videos show you how to cut a panel with a 45-degree angle using just a hand saw. Taking the next step, you could invest in a circular handsaw such as the Ozito PXC 18V 150mm Circular Saw - Skin Only. It is an excellent starter tool if you wish to tackle more projects in the future.

Here is a handy step-by-step video: D.I.Y. corner shelves

Let me tag our experienced member @JoeAzza for further advice.

Please keep us updated, we look forward to seeing your shelves once they are installed.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hello @XD

After reading your request I'm assuming that you want a  beveled edge on the shelving, Bunnings sell beveled molding timber, if you don't have the power saw or a table saw, you could cut and glue/nail the beveled molding to the front/side of the timber shelving, you might need a mitre box and hand saw to cut mitres at the corner joints, .@Ericl

might be able to add to this idea.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Can i confirm that when you mentioned that bunnings will do cuts on overlength timber this includes pine decking, specifically treated pine. I need 20 or so replacement deck stair treads cut down to size to fit as replacement for rotting stairs on an existing set of stairs.

Hello @Ferdad

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. Thank you for joining us and sharing your question about timber cutting at the store.

Although the drop saw is set to cut oversized timber, it does have its limits. If you can tell me your closest store and post the lengths and thickness you are planning to have cut I can ask the store to make sure they are able to cut it. It's great to know that you are planning on renovating your stairs. We would love to see any updates you can share while you renovate them.

If you need more assistance, please let us know.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Thanks so much, @MitchellMc

I have a question about the delivery of wood. I don't have a big car and I don't have a towbar, so I rely heavily on the Bunnings delivery service.

I love the online shop and delivery service, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to get 90x35mm untreated pine delivered. The website just states 'In-store only'. Are there any plans to include structural pine for delivery?

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hello @Linlin

Thank you so much for sharing your concern with timber delivery. There are times when deliveries need to be discussed with the store due to their length or weight. Sometimes the length you are asking for requires a large vehicle for it to be delivered, and the delivery cost does go up. If you need assistance please tell me the closest store in your area and the quantity of timber you need. I can call them and assist you with organizing delivery.

We would love to see the project you are planning to build. Our ever-helpful members are more than happy to assist and provide information for your project should you have any questions.

If you need more advice or information, please let us know.
