Re: How to hang a tire punching bag

Hello @joshua2

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about hanging a tire punching bag.

The steel beam you are looking at has been designed to hold the weight of the roof sheets and provide support to the other beams its interconnected with. It's been designed to withstand rough weather and strong wind to a certain point. Any unexpected additional load could cause it to bend or fail.

An elite athlete can generate anywhere from 300 to 700kg of force in a single kick. This force will generate a lot of dynamic force which gets transferred to the bag in this case the tires and onto whatever its connected to. If its not strong enough or properly supported, it will collapse and fail. Reinforcing the beam will be involved and can cost a fair bit. I propose building a separate hanging post for your tire punching bag so that it will not affect this structure. I suggest having a look at the SMAI Commercial Boxing Bag Stand as a possible candidate for your tire bag. You can also emulate the design by using a tall fence post in combination with Xin Adjustable Wall Mount Punching Bag Hanger Heavy-Duty Boxing Bag Wall Bracket.

Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the tire punching bag? This will give our members a better idea of its configuration and we'll be able to offer you more ideas on how to hang the tire bag.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @AlanM52 for their recommendations.

Re: How to hang a tire punching bag

Good morning @joshua2

@EricL has described the issues well with where you are thinking of hanging the bag. That roof and those thin steel beams are designed for the load of the carport itself. I would go down the route of a more secure postion (Hanging off a wall on a bracket or a seperate post)

However if you really want to hang it off the carport structure :surprised:

I would install a new beam next to the the vertical supports, between the beam. I am thinking something along the lines of 190 x 45mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine 6.0m And fix it between two of the shortest vertical spanned supports. I would also install some diagonal stays from the vertical post to the beams overhead to help with the force of the bag swinging as It will weaken the posts if not re-enforced.

Note, I really wouldnt install it on the carport.
