Ozito vs Ryobi bandsaw?

Hi to all on the Group. I have been adding to my woodworking tools and have a good selection Ozito products which for occational hobby use I found are excellent value for money, especially the Warrenty.

I am looking at a Band Saw & while the Ozito unit at $149 looks good, the Ryobi unit at $399 does look a better unit and I would be interested in anyones experience with either.

Both the Ozito and Ryobi bandsaws have their strengths, and the right choice depends on how often you plan to use it and the type of projects you're tackling. The Ozito bandsaw is a solid budget option for light hobby work, with a compact design that's great for smaller workshops. It's a good pick if you're mainly cutting softer woods or thinner stock, and the 3-year warranty is a nice safety net. However, it can struggle a bit when cutting thicker, hardwood cuts and with precise or curved work over time.

The Ryobi, on the other hand, is a step up in terms of power and build quality, which typically means better cutting performance and longevity. It also tends to have a more robust frame, smoother operation, and a larger table, which can make a big difference for more intricate or frequent cutting tasks. The higher price reflects this, but it could be a worthwhile investment if you're planning to expand your woodworking skills or take on more demanding projects.

Have you considered what kind of blades you'll be using or if you'll be cutting more than just wood, like plastics or light metals? That might also influence which bandsaw is better for your needs.

From a past profession in the powertool industry, I can attest that general performance between the two is close. The higher belt speed/min of the Ryobi is a definite advantage as it will deliver a cleaner cut. Plus Ryobi's one has better and more secure fine tuning alignment adjustments of the band guides and bearings. So, giving better band tension and cutting accuracy with less band wear. Cutting specs are basically the same though Ryobi doesn't even state this in the manual.

Having said all that, at a $250 higher price-point do I think it's worth it . . . then probably no, not for your first one. I would go the Ozito and get familiar with the pros and con's over time vs how often you actually use it. Then you might consider a step up to something in-between DIY and much higher-end.

But I would also before making that decision, do more research on end-user reviews. Look for consistency and not one off experiences. These tend to be from people not knowing how to use it correctly or some other concern end-user driven.

@EricL and @Nailbag have explained it perfectly 🙂 They took the words out of my mouth, right down to @Nailbag's suggestion about Ozito price being lower puts it into a perfect starting saw to learn how to use it and then if you decide to stretch into that area purchase a saw that has more abilities.

If you were going to get right into using the bandsaw to manufacture things I would suggest to explore further brands, there will probarly be a wider range of abilities as you go up in price.

Here is an example of what I mean.

I have an ozito battery impact drill, mate has a Milwalkie battery impact drill. He had a job that needed an impact drill. When he used his Milwalkie drill it couldnt make a real impact into the old hardwood garage doorframe, where as my ozito absoluty wouldnt stop 🙂 Yeah much stirring was done but then on finer jobs (installing guttering on that same garage) The graduation of impact/torque left the ozito in the dust. So the "stirring" came back to haunt me 🙂 If I had the $$$ I would go for a higher priced brand (I like makita) (and get real life examples of use) but as a starting point the price and ability is what I usually go for.

Made a decision to share yet?

I'm interested to see which way (or no way) you went.

I personally went with the biggest 'throat' I could afford. This turned out to be 14".

I made a lotta toys (not particularly good) for my boys until they discovered Nintendo and X-Box.

Then I found, being a big band-saw, it was fantastic for home projects - now I was having fun.

Hi Noyade & Others I have already thanked for thier input.

As its my first Bandsaw I am going to go with the Ozito.

It will give me an idea on how usefull it will be.

May then update or stick with it.

My first bandsaw was also the Ozito and later on it was used (with Ozito table saw) to make my 2018 Bandsaw.

The saw is like 95 percent Bunnings and the other 5 percent stuff like Kmart skateboards for the blade guide bearings.

I will post a project about that but it will only be a photo overview with brief descriptions as hundreds of photos were taken over the 5 month build.
