Hedging plant suggestions please

Hello,

We are looking at using a hedge to soften the front of our brick house. Can anyone suggest a good plant for us? We don't want to have to be constantly trimming it, and aren't brilliant at keeping plants alive. Not keen on Lilly Pilly as the neighbours have some and they drop berries over our fence. We are in the Melbourne suburbs.

As long as you are very patient, then I would suggest a Camelia Sasanqua. They are beautiful.

For something faster growing, look at Murrayas. They are very easy to grow, will typically reach a height of a couple of metres, are easy to prune into shape, have lovely green folliage and creamy white flowers in sping and summer with a lovely orange fragrance.

What colour are your bricks @Nic1979? Depending on the colour of your house then you might want to consider a photinia for its striking fiery red leaves. The flowers aren't very attractive but its very tough and easy to grow. They are popular in my area.

Will look at camelias and murrayas. Not sure the red photinia would work as its a red brick house. Are camelias easy to grow and care for?

Camellias are hardy and grow well pretty much anywhere in Australia. They certainly do well in Melbourne and have a really long flowering season. They don't mind a bit of frost. In summer you need to give them some water but they aren't too thirsty. Most of the hedging varieties don't mind full sun even in the middle of summer, although you should get a bit of shade from your house. Hope that helps.

Pittosporum's are also a good alternative. They are pretty hardy and can tolerate a lack of attention. They come in a range of different shades of green. Depending on the variety that you get, they can grow relatively quickly. Once established and at teh height and shape that you are after, they will only need a trim a couple of times a year.

Another option would be to use magnolias - i know it's not your traditional screening plant but has lovely glossy green leaves with a rust undertone and has beautiful perfumed flowers. Can be slow growing and you can varieties that only grow to 1 to 2 metres - plus you can trim them to keep them at your desired height and shape.

Red Robin are great, we have them in town and they have been under water with each flood and out in the boiling sun and never gets watered. Iam now growing them very hardy plant.

Did you decide what to grow Nic?

The camellia at the front of our place is just starting to flower. It will look spectacular in a few weeks.

Not yet greygardener. We thought we should wait until Spring to plant something.

Hi POPPINS, thanks for the tip, Im thiking same as you Red ROBIN. but im just not sure if they can tolerate the heat and -4 temps we get also we have black soil ?????. I do love them however and they are are great height. Thanks again . trayzee 67

Red Robin is a tough plant, I have seen a large hedge go under in a floods and at the same place out in a very hot sun as well as frost and - 4 degs maybe less as its close to a gully. Mine is the same out in the sun and never gets watered plus we had -3 deg this year and its out in flower now.

Don't worry about the cold or frost they are tough, we went down to - 4 degs and been out in full sun and now they are in flower.

Im really enjoying all the input everyone is giving each other , and its cetainly helping myself, I never realized how Difficult it is to select a "Hedge or Tree" Screen. espically when it is so dry here in Toowoomba/ it seems a contradiction as you see all the flowers etc out for "Carnival of Flowers ". A nursery today specializing in Australian natives" told me not to bother planting anything .. as its so dry and wait for rain.!!

You all have been so very helpful and i look forward to logging in more. Just a note I dont want to steal the gardening areas THUNDER as its AMAZING!! but on facebook a great place to go if you want a plant identifed is What Plant is That. just post a picture and in less than a day they seem to know. as they identified a red plant i posted on here, . But Im so glad i found this site.

Viburnum odoratissimus is hardy too. Beautiful fragrance. Will grow in full or semi shade to 3m. Need to trim annually. Easy to propagate by cuttings.

Hedging plant suggestions please. I have 2M wide walkway. I would like to put hedging plants along the fence as privacy between my neighbour.
Its sunny in am and shade in pm. what kind of hedging can you suggest ? thanks

Could you please let us know where you are based? It will help community members recommend some plants for you. It might also be helpful to know what kind of soil you have and if there are any other considerations. Knowing how high you want the hedge to be could be important.
