Hi everybody,
First time poster here. I was wondering if somebody how any idea how i could make one of these outdoor pencil sculptures that i could concrete into the ground. I'm just not sure how they even were able to cut these and if bunnings sells the correct type of wood for something like this.
Hope somebody could help. Thank you!
Good Morning @hareeshk94 , @Noyade, and @EricL
hahaha I must have a dark mind, the first video frame grab I thought "Who has skewered the human for the bbq"
I missed most of those shrink down shows
For some reason even tho I love sci fi I couldnt believe that a body could shrink into a smaller space.... And yeah that is a geeky convo for sure ![]()

Much better day outside so I thought I'd give this a go. I was thinking of ripping the hexagon - but got things to do today, so I just went with the square beam.
Very old hardwood - probably was 3" square but now shrunk to 70mm square.
Just lots of angled cuts. Be brutal.
I have a 12" drop saw - so no sliding required.
Finish up with a 6" sander - no need for finesse.
I still think it would look better with a hexagonal body.
"I still think it would look better with a hexagonal body."
On second thought - I don't think anyone would care or notice six sides compared to eight sides.
Rip the edges off.
Incorporate a metal covered eraser? 🤔😁
Morning @Noyade
So the question becomes... Are you going to make a "nose" for the art installation? ![]()
I do like the way you have made yours and def a square post would be easier to cut.

G'day Dave @Dave-1
I eventually removed the corners with just a circular saw - roughly.
Then tried to delineate all the edges with texta.
But from a distance it doesn't seem to matter?
Now I just need to make a big hand...
Cheers!
Hello @Noyade
Very nicely done as usual, another "live demonstration" is always a pleasure to see. I look forward to seeing the giant animatronic hand.

Hi @hareeshk94,
People always seem to be saying to me 'there's no need for you to also poke your nose in' and here I am doing it again.
What you have there is advanced art & craft and I don't think you will be able to do that job with only a hand saw.
Let's say you have with you now a pine pole and hand saw
I want you to cut a piece off the end with a straight saw cut - how you feeling?
Now I want you to cut the end off at 45 degrees - how you feeling?
For three pencils you have to make at least 12 accurate cuts (forget 18), each one at a greater shallow angle that 45° which means more sawing. I would not attempt the with a hand saw but I would have three nice pencils within 1/2 hour just eyeballing using a power saw. Having said that I would likely setup a jig and use my DIY 14' bandsaw.
It's likely but I will ask, besides this workshop have you done the rounds within your circle(s) asking for help?
Maybe have another go because armed with all the info from here, you just need to find someone with a power saw.
The other thing you can try is contacting a local mens shed.
Cheers
