What natural insect repellent for vegetable bed?

Hi there,

I have just built a garden bed and noticed there has been something eating away my veggies. Anyone has any suggestions on  what I can do (natural/organic) solution preferred.

Are there such plants I can plant around to repell these munchers?

Re: Natural inscent bug repellent

Hi @Pete112,

There are a few natural products you can try. Given this is likely caterpillars, you could go with the Richgro 1L Beat-A-Bug Naturally Based Insect Spray, which does contain pyrethriums. Alternatively, you could use Dipel, which uses a naturally occurring bacterium that only affects caterpillars. Just in case it is slugs, we have OCP 600g Eco-Shield Organic Snail & Slug Killer, which is an iron-based product.

If you’d prefer to rely on companion planting, several plants naturally help repel pests. Marigolds are one of the best as their scent deters aphids, whitefly, and nematodes. Basil, mint, rosemary, thyme, and chives all give off strong aromas that discourage insects while being useful herbs for cooking. Nasturtiums are another good choice as they act as a “trap crop,” attracting pests away from your veggies. However, these are likely not effective for caterpillars.

Also, try to inspect your plants regularly, remove any visible grubs or snails by hand, and encourage beneficial insects such as ladybirds and lacewings, which naturally keep pest numbers down. Combining a few of these approaches should help you get the upper hand without using anything harsh.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: What natural insect repellent for vegetable bed?

Hello @Pete112

Looking at the chewing patterns on the leaf, it appears that caterpillars have attacked your vegetables. I suggest using OCP 40g Eco-Caterpillar-Killer to manage and control the caterpillar infestation. Eco-caterpillar killer is an effective insecticide made with a beneficial bacteria that specifically targets caterpillars. It is also known as DiPel and is safe for bees, ladybeetles and other beneficial insects.

Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when spraying.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
