Hi there ( posts keep disappearing )
could some please tell me the best way to remove a pot burn a wooden bench top?
Hi Jason, I have this to be repaired. It’s not very deep so should I start with a fine grit sandpaper?
Oh and any idea of the type varnish should use?
G'day @mnicholson

Hi @mnicholson,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
I'd use a medium sandpaper, such as this 120 Grit Sandpaper wrapped around a Cork Sanding Block to ensure things stay flat. With some time and effort, you'll be able to remove the burnt material from the top of the timber.
Alternatively, you could use a random orbital sander to speed things up a bit.
Once the stain is removed, you'll want to clean away any sawdust with a soft brush or cloth, then reseal the timber.
It's difficult to say with 100% certainty, but it looks like your benchtop is oiled, not varnished. If you rub your hand over the surface, can you feel the texture of the timber grain, or does it feel plasticky and smooth?
If you can feel the grain, then it is likely oil. If it feels smooth and plasticky, it is likely varnish. It would be difficult to say what product would be best without seeing the stain removed, but I suspect a clear oil or clear satin varnish would be the way to go.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Jacob
