How to hang wall cabinet in fridge cavity wall?

Hello!

I am in the process of making/ installing a cabinet above my fridge - today when removing the cornice I found this bracing ply behind the gyprock. There is a electrical cable which I can see as it runs to the socket. I have also found the studs with a finder but one is very close to where the cable runs. The cabinet will be kinda heavy as its 900mm wide plus the load of cups when full so I'd like to attach it properly.

I was wondering what the best way to attach the cabinet would be?

Hello @sunflowerz,

Can you please tell me how big the wall cabinet is? This will give our members a better idea of how heavy it is and if it will need extra support when being hung on your wall.

Is there any chance of attaching the cabinet to the side walls over the fridge itself? If there is no choice but to attach the cabinet in that space, I can only suggest double checking the position of your studs and make sure to stay away from the stud with the electrical cable.

Do you need the cabinet to reach the ceiling?

I was thinking attaching something (cabinet/shelving) to the two walls (leave the back alone) and extend gyprock down to it.

Just a thought.

Thanks for your reply. I am planning on building this cabinet my self using 16mm Melamine and having the dimension as: width: 900mm, height: 500mm, depth: 500mm. I'd like to install a shelf at 250mm. I was then going to use 9mm MDF as trim strips around the outside of the cabinet to fill in the gaps and make doors out of 9mm MDF as well, then install soft close hinges. I'd like to reinstall cove cornice on the top trim between the cabinet and the fridge as this is what the rest of the kitchen has.

I don't mind the idea of attaching the cabinet to the side walls as someone mentioned the fridge needs this to vent, I've found the stud on both sides but just wonder if this will be enough to support the cabinet as I plan on storing our glasses in there so when it's full it might be heavy.

I am re-facing the kitchen and using the dulux renovation range in Lexicon gloss. The kitchen cabinets are made from 16mm Melamine and the doors are 16mm MDF (from what I can tell) so plan on using the same material on the fridge cabinet so it all flows.

The actual dimension of the cavity is:

Width: 980mm, Height: 600mm, Depth: 700mm

Yes I'd like the cabinet to reach the ceiling so that it flows with the rest of the kitchen

I believe that nail is purely to attach the bracing ply to the stud as those type of nails are the whole way across.

Hi @sunflowerz,

If you can attach it to the side studs in several locations and then in a couple of locations at the rear away from the cable, that should be enough to hold the weight of your cabinet. Many stud finders have a mode to detect live wires in the wall, such as the Ozito 50mm Stud Detector SDR-050. Use one to map out the cable route and avoid it with your fixings. If you are not confident in securing the cabinet adequately, it might be worth reaching out and enlisting a professional to install the cabinet.

Thanks for your reply. I am confident to give it a go myself, I just wanted to get hanging advise first. I have found some brackets so I'll look at including them in my hanging plans
