How to paint a buffet?

Hi all,

need to paint buffet and hutch with white,

not sure where to start,

can anyone help with steps and process

We went with Porter's Chalk.

No wood preparation whatsoever. Then a clear coat of polyurethane to cover.

Done about 12 years ago. Holding up well.
