Mixer tap grub screw stuck

Mixer tap grub screw stuck

Hi, hoping to get some help on this one. I need to replace the cartridge on a Mondo mixer tap but cannot undo the grub screw. It takes a 2mm allen key, however having said that there is a tiny bit of wiggle room when using this size. I've also tried a hex drill bit but this has not worked either. WD40 has been used as well. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Re: Mixer tap grub screw stuck

Hello @Sarah01

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's a pleasure to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about your mixer tap.

My first suggestion is to try the Craftright 26 Piece Ball End Hex Key Set. These Allen keys have a special ball end that allows them to sit further into the grub screw. If the grub screw is too tight, I suggest getting some pliers and holding on to the top of the key to give you leverage.

The second method is to use Sutton Tools No3 Easy Out Extractor Screw Set. Please bring the tap with you so that the tool specialist can match the bit with the grub screw you have. This bit set is designed to screw into the head of the grub screw and remove it. Unfortunately, this will ruin the grub screw and will need to be replaced with a new one. I suggest getting the Pinnacle M5 - M8 Black Assorted Grub Screw Set, simply match the one you removed from the set and screw the new grub screw in.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi Sarah @Sarah01

"It takes a 2mm allen key"

2mm? It does look a bit bigger in the photo. And you did say above "wriggle room."

Eric has great advice above.

But may I suggest trying a slightly larger allen key and don't laugh - try a few IMPERIAL sized allen keys.

Hi @Noyade

An excellent suggestion as always, @Sarah01 could get lucky and an imperial Allen key might fit snugly into that grub screw!

Re: Mixer tap grub screw stuck

The grub screws in the shower set I have used a 2.5mm allen (hex) key.
With WD 40, apply, leave for at least 10 minutes, use hex key to apply pressure in Both directions; may need to repeat a few times.
If you have a soldering iron, hold the hot iron on the screw to heat it up and get the grub screw to expand thus breaking the corrosion holding the screw in.

Thank you for sharing that method of removing a stuck grub screw. Let me tag @Sarah01 to make sure they are aware of your suggestion.

It sounds like you have a bit of experience with non-cooperating tapware. If you have any projects on the go, please don't hesitate to post an update. I'm sure our members would be keen to see what you're working on.
