Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @raydowns. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a fish tank.

It’s great to hear you’re keen to learn how to build your own aquarium stand.

When constructing the stand, start by planning your design carefully and ensuring it can safely support the enormous weight of a filled 6-foot aquarium. These tanks can hold hundreds of litres of water, which equates to hundreds of kilograms. Build a solid frame from structural timber, such as 90 x 45 mm treated pine or hardwood, and add cross-bracing for strength. Make sure the top surface is perfectly level and use marine-grade plywood or similar for the top base. Finish the stand with moisture-resistant paint or sealant to protect it from spills.

Due to the size and pressure of a 6-foot tank, I’d strongly recommend researching aquarium construction thoroughly and watching expert tutorials before starting. Even a small mistake could cause leaks or structural failure once filled, so careful preparation is key.

Re: How to build a fish tank stand?

Hi @raydowns,

Here are some photos of the fish tank stand that I made for a family member.

I did not take any photos of the original build.

The low res and small photos were taken with a earlier digital camera at a later date when little mice critters replaced the fish and I had to make two top mesh frames.

As @MitchellMc mentioned the stand needs to be very strong, I braced the front corners (top & bottom) with heavy duty brackets and the back is braced with 70 x 35 like a X - bottom to top corner.

With hindsight and to mitigate a flooding event (which happened) I should have used pavers to raise the tank off the floorboards.

Cheers
