How to hang a 13kg mirror?

Hello,

I have a mirror 13kg (1.2m x 1m), which I'd like to hang.

I have marked on the photo the fixing-gap which is already on the mirror frame. This mirror used to be mounted onto a dresser. there were vertical uprights on the dresser. We had bolts which slotted into the gap on the mirror, fed the bolts through the vertical upright and attached a nut.

Ideally, i'd like to use these existing 'gaps'.

I'm wondering if there is any sort of fixing i can attach to this gap, and then attach picture wire to?

Also, is picture wire strong enough for a 13kg mirror?

Hi @ccyounger,

The slots on your mirror frame are designed to accept the head of a screw, which then drops down onto it and locks into place. Given the weight of the mirror, I would advise against using a picture wire system. The wire may not be strong enough to safely support such a heavy piece.

Instead, I recommend attaching a length of 19mm thick pine timber across the studs. This will create a solid base to mount the mirror securely. You can then screw the mounting screws directly into this timber at the corresponding width for the slots on your mirror.

This method should give you a much safer and more stable way to hang your mirror.

I'm sure there are many ways of attaching wire to the mirror without using those inserts - but depending on the 'entry' diameter, would a fishing line sinker or a small nut fit with wire attached and moved up to lock in position?

The approach makes sense.

Regarding the mounting screws, and putting them into 19mm deep pine. Would 19mm be depth enough to hold the weight? I would have thought I'd need longer depth e.g. 40mm.

You can use a longer screw if you'd like, but the 19mm thick timber is fine for this weight. I'd suggest using a 30mm screw and leaving 5-10mm exposed to hook the mirror fitting onto.

Just be aware, it's not as easy as it looks to get that perfect screw distance. A few millimeters out and it simply won't fit. Accidentally angle the screw - and it won't be level.

Well, that's an amateur's experience with a power-board. 😊

And for any punters watching who love large sheltered plastic outdoor clocks that can be wind affected - try a larger washer with Loctite to the screw/bolt head - and create a tighter fit.

Hi, is there any advice on the minimum height of the 19mm timber? Can I go thin e.g. 40mm.

40mm would likely suffice @ccyounger, but personally, I would push it out to the 64 x 19mm 1.2m DAR Pine Standard just so there is a bit more strength.
