Wall mounting TV to plasterboard

Would the 25mm blue gripit plasterboard fixes be suitable to wall mount a tv to the plasterboard?

It says they can hold up to 60kg.

I have a 50” tv that weighs 11.5kg and was looking at wall mounting to the plasterboard as the steel studs are not where we would like to mount the tv.

Does anyone know if these have been used for this purpose before?

In all honesty, I haven't seen GripIt 25mm Blue Plasterboard Fixings before as they appear to be a relatively new product to our range. I've just spent some time watching comparison videos of them verse standard fixing systems. They rate very high and I would be comfortable recommending them to you for this application. They were comparable to spring toggles which are what I would normally recommend if you can't go directly into studs or don't want to bridge between them with timber. Spring toggles are generally only rated for around 10kg each and these GripIt's definitely exceeded that.

This will not work, in any way at all.

What you can do, however, is get some 50mm x 5mm steel plate of the required length and mount the TV to that.

I'm saying, get the steel, work out where the TV set is going to be mounted to the steel plate, drill the holes for both the TV mounts and the holes in the wall, in the steel plate and then Tek screw the plate to the steel wall studs.

Screwing into plasterboard is in no way a strong hold, even with them wing type holders

Many thanks for your contribution to the discussion @MikeTNZ. I completely agree that securing a wall-mounted television to studs is the preferred method. Connecting to a solid structure, such as a timber frame, should always be considered before a sheeting material. However, @shane37 would need to use at least two of the GripIt 25mm Blue Plasterboard Fixings for the bracket and that would be a significant holding force, which should be more than sufficient if he chooses to use them.

I'm behind the times with technology - I have a National 58" plasma TV that weighs 90kg. Never did I consider mounting it on a wall. 😯

This product has been widely sold in the UK for some time now and the weight guides were independently verified on Australian plasterboards when they began selling them here. Please be aware the weight ratings are for sheer force.

If you search GripIt on Youtube you'll find a whole heap of independent reviews on them. I'll include the GripIt installation video for flush mount flat screen tv brackets below.

There is no need to apologise. I must say, had I been asked the same question before seeing this product, my response would have been much the same as yours. Traditionally, there really hasn't been a product suited to hanging heavy items on plasterboard. I'm really impressed with what I have seen so far from this one. The manufacturer even offered to send some out to me so I could test them myself. They really do back their product.

I think my only concern with a product like this, isn't actually the product itself, but the integrity of the plasterboard it's being screwed into.

We've all heard of places that have an issue with rising damp, this could weaken the plasterboard (which is merely paper covered chalk), enough

to cause failure of the wall lining under this sort of loading.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be awkward or difficult, I like the concept of these fasteners.

Im looking at mounting a tv in my bedroom soon - Theres no wall stud where I want to mount mine either, so Im going to buy and mount an adjustable tv bracket to the closest wall stud, and just swing the tv over to where i want it located. If your studs are close enough to the location you want, you could just do the same? Im hoping my brackets will all be hidden behind my tv anyway although its a smaller tv so will see I guess lol

Short answer is NO!

I have no doubt that the blue gripit plasterboard fixes would hold 60kg, but the plasterboard would not hold that kind of weight without any kind of support to distribute the weight over a larger area than the gripit fixings give.

In my opinion, without actually looking at the job, I would screw a metal bracket to the wall attaching it to the wall studs (probably using a tek screw or something very similar), then attach the TV bracket to that metal bracket which you just attached to the wall in the position you want the TV, then mount your TV.

In the end it comes down to this... how much is your TV worth? And are you prepared to buy a new one if and when it falls off the wall because you wanted to cut some corners?

I've mounted many TV's for customers and have never had any complaints that I took the extra time to mount them properly. In fact it has brought me more repeat business because I didn't cut corners.

Hi Noyad,

Thanks for sharing that video. It helps to cement how important it is to fix to studs. There is no substitute for strength other than studs when mounting to plasterboard walls.

ive used these for this purpose, and they really work, but you must be able to get the wings deployed fully and be able to screw the central nut in fully behind the plaster board, only then does the central screw compress these wings, with the plasterboard to the front plastic body plus whatever you attach to it. it doesnt work if you cant deploy the wings properly though or if you can’t tighten and the central nut. i’ve also used these for floating shelves and speaker mounts. they work great if used properly.

We have had a product here for many years that will do the job simply and admirably..

They are called "Wall Mates"..You can get them in plastic or metal form..The metal form would easily hold your TV..

I have used these to mount a heavy projector with a metal projector mount to a plasterboard ceiling!

Interesting enough, both the metal and plastic versions of Wallmates have the same max rating of 10kgs each. The concern I always have with people using fixings into plasterboard is that you need to consider a few other factors instead of just static weight.

We can assume that four Wallmates would be used in this application. That's 40kgs of static load they are capable of holding at the wall's surface. As soon as you start moving out from the wall, due to the wall mount system, the force applied to the fixings increases. Add a TV Wall Mount with Tilt and Swivel, and the 11kg TV at full extension could come close to the max load of the fixings. Another concern is that when the static load moves away from the wall, it starts putting more force on the top fixings, pulling them out of the wall instead of downwards. The weight is also no longer being evenly distributed. If a person then leans on the TV, or perhaps a child pulls on it, there's another 10kgs of weight which could cause the fixings to fail. That's not even taking into account if the Wallmates have been installed correctly. I know I've installed a couple of them before that have chewed out the plaster.

Although their use would likely be perfectly fine for this application, I'm always over-cautious when it comes to hanging items. This stems from speaking to the various suppliers of these types of fixing mechanisms and heeding their warnings about them being labelled with max load specifications. Even the GripIt manufacturer was very adamant that much more needs to be taken into account than just static weight, even though their four fixings can hold up to 240kgs, and this is an 11.5kg television.

My colleague @EricL has responded to your discussion, and his thoughts are similar to mine. Your idea sounds quite reasonable, as attaching a horizontal piece of timber to bridge the gaps between the verticle studs is a common way to provide a secure mounting area. As he's mentioned, at least 65mm screws should be used, and the timber should be around 19mm thick. Typically, you'd attach the timber over the plasterboard, but if you are looking to have the TV mounted as close to the wall as possible, cutting the plasterboard away could be an option.
