UPDATED: Recently found some progress photos from when we built our decking.
That looks fantastic @Tara86. Congratulations. I'm sure you'll enjoy a lot of time on it with friends and family in the years to come.
Great to see you share your first project with us on Workshop. We're really pleased you could join us. Feel free to post whenever you need a hand or have something to share. And let me know if you ever have any feedback about how we can make Workshop more useful for you.
Thanks again,
Jason
Nice one! Great feeling of accomplishment and pride 🙂
Thank you both we appreciate the positive feedback. Definitely a proud moment and felt accomplished being able to do it ourselves. Ha ha although it has now made our DIY list a lot longer. Just need to win lotto to fund it all!!
Can I be so rude to ask how much this cost? I am looking at creating a long deck down the side of my house (10 x 3) and would prefer decking.
Hi @kimb,
Thanks for joining in the discussion and a warm welcome to Workshop. We're happy you could join us and trust that you'll get lots of helpful advice and inspiration for your projects from our community members. Feel free to post whenever you need a hand or have a new project to share.
I will tag @Tara86 for you so she is alerted to your question.
Do you know what type of timber you might like to use for your deck? Once you've decided, it should be easy to estimate the cost if you are building it yourself. You can check out options here - https://www.bunnings.com.au/our-range/building-hardware/decking
Hi Kim - not rude at all.
Our deck is 12m x 4.2m. We used Merbau 140mm width. All up it was around $5500-$6000. This included joists, bearers, posts, cement and screws.
We saved heaps buying the Merbau in bunches of random lengths. Took longer as I had to measure and cut to align with the bearers.
Hope this helps but let me know if you have any more questions! Good luck!
You should be proud. Looks great.
Visitors to this popular post who are interested in building their own deck might find these other Workshop discussions useful.
Thanks,
Hi tara86
Your decking looks fantastic
Did you look look at Bunnings modular system of deck building or is this way too expensive
Any thoughts Jason
Cheers
Hi @maysie49,
Welcome to Workshop. I trust that you will receive lots of fantastic advice and inspiration for your projects from our community.
I would recommend you hit the Start a discussion button and create a new topic about modular decking as a new post is more likely to be seen by more members. You might like to also include photos of your space or any plans you might have sketched so we can see what you are working with and might have planned.
Thanks for joining the discussion.
Hi @Tara86, the deck looks great, did you have to put plans into council? We are about to do one and not sure where to start.
Thanks for joining in the discussion @mags33. I'm sure if you call your council they will be able to assist in regards to local planning requirements.
I would also encourage you to hit the Start a discussion button and share your plans with the Workshop community. We have lots of helpful, knowledgable and experienced members who would be happy to provide some assistance with the project to get you started.
Welcome to Workshop. Please let me know if you need any help getting the most from the site.
Hi @mags33 definitely best to check with your council first. We spoke to ours and found out that it was a lot easier for us if it’s not attached to the house and no Pergola. We will need to apply for permits if we decide to put a Pergola up. Good Luck!!
May I ask you Tara what it cost to build this size deck.
regards
glennis
Hi Glennis (@gce20159)
Welcome to the Workshop community. We're pleased you could join us and look forward to reading all about your own projects and plans.
@Tara86 had replied above that the deck cost around $5500-$6000. This included joists, bearers, posts, cement and screws. The deck is 2m x 4.2m and Tara used Merbau of 140mm width.
Hope that helps. Feel free to post anytime you need a hand with anything.
Looks pretty perfect to me. Nice job!
Are you going to finish off the sides and add any railings?
Erik
@vanderneut Thanks heaps! We have since built side steps and landscaped in between the deck and side fencing. I’ve been meaning to add the photos.
We are going to add railings and cover the exposed part under the deck but had a few other jobs we’ve had to put our money towards first.
It would be great to see some updated photos @Tara86. Sounds like you've been busy!
Sorry @Jason been a crazy month!! This is what we have done to the side. Hoping to extend the deck in the small corner in the next couple of months!
Looking great @Tara86! Many thanks for the update.
Let us know if you need a hand with anything.
hi, did you have to get approval for this deck from the council
Welcome to Workshop @Dave21 and thanks for joining in the discussion. We would encourage you to contact your council if you are interested in building your own deck as local laws can differ. What are your plans?
Feel free to post anytime you need a hand or have something to share. We are looking forward to reading all about your projects.
@Dave21 Hi Dave, as Jason explained best to check the regulations in your Council. For us we didn’t need a permit as long as it wasn’t attached to the house for stability. Ours is completely seperate to the house. However if we decide to build a Pergola we are required to apply for one.
Good luck!
Hi @Tara86,
Do you have any "before" photos to show what the back of the house looked like before you built the deck? It would be great for Workshop members to see what you were originally working with.
Many thanks,
Hi Jason sure thing. Here are some pics of our backyard prior to the decking. Let me know if there is anything else that would be helpful to add.
@Jason Sorry not all pictures loaded.
