How to clad Colorbond fence with timber?

Hi there,

I would like to do two things:

1. Raise the height of my boundary fence for privacy

2. Hide my colorbond fence with timber

I'm hoping to do the follow:

1. fix horizontal beams to the colorbond fence posts

2. fix vertical timber fence paling to the horiz. beams

Is there any problem with this?

Ideally I'd like to raise the fence between 200mm-600mm. Can fence paling cantilever that much above the top of the existing colorbond fence or will I need to build something to support the top edge, if so what would you suggest?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your Colorbond fence.

I suggest having a quick look at this featured project - Poolside fence makeover by @ProjectPete. It's an excellent example of how you can put a timber frame on your Colorbond fence. Bottom support is crucial as too much weight can cause the Colorbond fence to lean or twist. By building the support as a frame the weight is spread out and is not solely carried by the fence posts.

I recommend checking the rules and regulations of your local council regarding the height of your fence. Increasing by 200mm is not a great deal and could possibly be permitted by the council fence rules. However, 600mm is a lot of fence to add to your existing set. It's best to be safe rather being asked to remove the modifications you've made.
