How to trim a palm tree?

How would I go about getting these pods/parts off this palm before they start to open like this?

Good evening @dio612

I'm just assuming - is the height the issue?

Rough estimate on how high this is?

A few years back I went with a pool pole with a pruning blade attached.

Adding the human with reaching arms - around 9 metres.

Hello @dio612

Thanks for sharing your question about removing the pods on your palm tree. It's great that you've received excellent advice from @Noyade. He just got ahead of me with the recommendation of a pruning saw. I suggest having a look at the Fiskars 2.2 - 4.5m QuikFit Telescopic Palm Saw if you don't have a long telescopic pole.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when working on your palm tree.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

I would say about 6-7meters tall. How do you attach it to the pole?

Hello @dio612

A standard pruning saw such as the Trojan Carbon Steel Pruning Saw has a hole at the back of the handle. On the condition that the pole is compatible with the size of the hole of the handle you can secure it by drilling into the pole and attaching the bolt and butterfly nut provided.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Is there a pole in bunnings that is compatible with the saw you suggested and can reach to 6-7m?

Hello @dio612

Perhaps the Hy-Clor 1.5m - 4.5m Extension Pole 3 Piece might fit the pruning saw. But I suggest double checking the size while you are at the store. When combined with your height or a taller individual in the family you should be able to reach 6+ meters. In my original suggestion I recommended looking at the Fiskars 2.2 - 4.5m QuikFit Telescopic Palm Saw which goes all the way to 4.5meters.

Re: How would I go about getting these pods/parts off this palm before they start to open like this?

I made two types.

The Trojan which @EricL has shown above - has a 25 mm internal diameter - fits any 25 mm pipe and I made it a long non-telescoping type.

Little trickier with the telescoping pool-pole. The aluminium tube needs a 25mm pipe insert to accommodate the 25 mm head.

Hope that makes sense.

Of course, if you're confident on a A- frame ladder @dio612 - that'll add a couple more metres to your reach.

Cheers.
