How to anchor hooks in wall?

Hi team!

I'm trying to hang the 'Adoored White Disc Hook' on a hollow drywall.

I've had a look at multiple Hollow Wall Hooks but am not sure which one will best suit the pre-attached screw on the Hook, and am concerned by a lot of the negative reviews on them.

Note: the pre-attached screw on the Hook is 10g/12g

I could have the wrong product - but the one negative review appears to be someone trying to attach this hook to thin Masonite on a hollow door.

Hard to tell what gauge the screw is and how long it is on the hook, but 8 G fits beautifully (around 10 mm needed) with plastic and metal screw in anchors...

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your wall hooks.

Due to the short mounting screw of the Adoored White Disc Hook I'm not sure if it will be long enough to properly anchor onto the body of the Ramset WallMate. Perhaps the smaller version such as the Ramset Nylon WallMate Mini Anchor - 4 Pack might work. But if it appears that the WallMate is not sufficient, I suggest changing your hook to an Adoored White Beau Robe Hook for better mounting to the drywall. You can use standard WallMates for this type of hook.

To clarify, the negative comments were on the different hollow wall anchor products I'd been considering - Nylon self-screw, Zinc self-screw, Twist N Lock, plugs.

I've seen far too many review photos of people putting holes in their walls, noting product failure. Even the recommendation from EricL (the Bunnings Team Member on this thread) only has 2.1-stars and people noting lots of issues - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ramset-nylon-wallmate-mini-anchor-4-pack_p2260949

I am factoring in user error, but it's disheartening to see so many holes in walls in these various reviews... So just want to make sure I'm crossing my t's and dotting my i's.

I appreciate your thoughts around this! Unfortunately, I tested a few of the hooks available in-store but found the Adoored White Disc Hook to be the only one that would hold two specific hats that I'd like to hang.

"But if it appears that the WallMate is not sufficient" - Would love to clarify what you mean here regarding it being insufficient. Are you referring to the screw/threads not going in or catching on the WallMate (Nylon or Mini Nylon)?

Hi @MckennaRenae

The easiest thing to do if you really want to use these hooks is to buy one and the smallest pack of the fixings and try screwing the hook into the fixing (before you put one in the wall). As this type of fixing sits on the surface, you will know if it will be secure if you screw it in to the fixing all the way. When it comes to the fixings failing, you are saying these are for hats! I don't know of many hats that will put enough load on one of these fixings to pull it out of the wall. The real question is what will be the maximum loading that will be placed on the hook because most times these pull out, it is the plasterboard that fails and not the fixing.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm referring to, there is a possibility that the pre-installed screw for the Adoored White Disc Hook is not long enough to provide an adequate hold onto the WallMate. In regards to the installation of the WallMate, the key is to drill a pilot hole into your plasterboard before you install the wall plug in place. By drilling a pilot hole, it prevents the plasterboard from rupturing and becoming weak.

As a possible alternative, I suggest cutting a 60mm piece of pine in a circular shape and mounting that first onto your wall and then screwing the white disc hook on top of the pine base. This will guarantee a firm hold as the screw of the white disc hook will properly imbed itself into the timber piece.

I have been going through the thread and checked out the hanging disk you want. It only has a short screw on it. I dont think it will be able to hold anything other then an overcoat due to that short screw. I do like @EricL 's suggestion about spreading the weight but that may change the look you want.

Plaster walls are around 10mm thick, so even if you used a stud finder and screwed it into a stud you are only going to get minimal thread into the timber. (I would suggest painting a large metal washer as a space to spread the weight much as the timber piece @EricL has suggested if you do this.)

Material type and thickness?
What are you wanting to secure that has a "safety concern"?

FYI, The screws in your first photo post are not suitable for both plastic and metal wall mates. Both are course timber threads. Wallmates have specific screws thread type. If you use the wrong ones, they typically dig in and strip the Wallmate through its material. I install a lot of fasteners for a wide range of applications, and Wallmates and next to toggles are never on the option to use list.
