How to install an architrave with a small gap between window and door?
Hi Team,
after some suggestions on how to frame a window and door next to each other. It's a french door so needs at very least 65 mm architrave, pref wider, but only 65mm architrave around the windows. There's not enough room for both....see photo. Allowing for a 5mm quirk on the door and window frame, the space is 110mm. They would prob need to be the same thickness ?
How do I go about solving this ?
Thanks advance,
Kerry, NZ

Re: Architrave advice
Hello @kerry6
I suggest three possible methods. First, use a Porta 42x11mm 2.7m Bullnose Architrave Pre Primed FJ Pine and compromise on the size for the door. I know you have your heart set on 65mm or bigger, but a solution must be found that will keep the balance of the door and window. Using this architrave there will be a bit of a space between the door and window, but due to the uniform size it will give the picture of a balanced set.
Next is to use 66 x 18mm 5.4m White Moulding Pine FJ Primed Aus Colonial for the door and window. But the on the window side the portion that is closest to the door will need to be trimmed down to 45mm. There will be no gap and when painted the door and windows architrave will merge as one. It will be a bit off balance but will look like a single entity.
The third option is to take the plunge and have the builder return to move the window another 100mm away from the door so that you can use any architrave you like.
Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendation.

Re: Architrave advice
Morning @kerry6
I would also go for a smaller framing around both window and door with a small gap between them, It will make the eyes feel easier when the glaze past the set. Maybe go for smaller sized verticals and a larger 65mm header across the top of the door? If you have some offcuts, Id tack them to the edge of the door frame and window and play around with the sizing to see what a gap between thyem and a no gap will actually look like.

Re: Architrave advice
Just a poor man's lunch time thought @kerry6
Cut a long board to suit - and cover the entire middle section.
Cheers.
