How to install hybrid flooring around doorframe?

I’m installing Hanwood Hybrid flooring on top of existing tiles. The house has an awkward layout with lots of diagonal corners and I’ve hit the first big challenge.

1. Do I cut the board so it fits the shape of the doorframe? And if I do, do I still leave 9.5mm expansion gap and then how do I finish it at the end?

2. Do I cut into the door frame (metal) and slide the board under?

Any tips are much appreciated!

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, metal door frames are usually structural elements that can't be cut to slip flooring underneath, so that is out of the question unless you could definitively prove it is not load-bearing in any way.

The only way I can see of getting a clean install is to use a Contour Gauge to mark the profile of the door jamb on the flooring, cut it to the profile and install it hard up against the jamb. You can then use a flexible sealant such as this Baltic No More Gaps Timber Floor Gap Filler to conceal any small gaps. As long as there is sufficient room for expansion on the opposite end of this run of flooring, you shouldn't have too many issues.

Hi Jacob,

Thanks so much! That’s very helpful . I don’t think they are load-bearing, as another part of the house has already laminate running under some of the jambs. But I prefer your method anyway and will just leave enough space on the opposite side for expansion. Thanks for the tip on the gauge. That will be very handy in other areas!

I agree with @JacobZ's suggestions, Definently wouldnt be touching the door frame 🙂 The trim between the carpet and your new flooring will also help with any expansion that turns up.

Hi @pas If you are replacing the skirting then I would trim the door jamb out like I've done in this video. This amount of cut out will have no detriment to the door jamb structurally.

If the skirts are staying then use the method @JacobZ describes with the contour gauge and a jigsaw with a scrolling blade installed.

The contour profiler I'm now in love with is from Coles.

Plastic - no damage to paint.

Long reach.

Locking mechanism.

Rough profile obtained and copied to stiff cardboard. Once done - keep nibbling the cardboard with scissors until the 'perfect' fit is obtained and then transfer the pattern to the laminate.
