How to unclog paint sprayer?

Any kind of liquid i can soak the sprayer in to dissolve all the dry paint residual?

Seems there are some residuals in the nozzle which makes the spray much weaker

Its not totally blocked though

We tried using hot water to clear it (but no improvement)

Also inspected other parts seems there are no blockage

Is that the Ozito 400W Power Paint Spray Gun @ivanptr? The ensure your spray gun performs optimally it's very important that you clean it out after every use, as once the paint dries in the ports and tubes, it's very difficult to remove the build-up. You'll find the cleaning instructions in the Ozito manual. At this stage, I'd recommend you prepare some warm-hot water with a little dishwashing detergent. Get an old toothbrush and start scrubbing all the parts. Pay special attention to any vent ports or tubes through which the paint is distributed. Use the provided cleaning needle to try and clear out the ports and vent holes. You can run the soapy water mix through the gun and spray it to see if it clears any blockages. Repeat this process until the inner workings are thoroughly cleaned. After each use, fill the paint reservoir with warm water and spray it until it runs clear before disassembling it for storage.

A port also allows air to enter the paint reservoir; if this is blocked, the paint will not be drawn out easily. This port should be somewhere on the top of where the paint reservoir is screwed onto the spray gun.

To resolve this issue, you will need to clean the unit until you find where the blockage is.

Yes, its the ozito one, do we need to open this lid ? cant find any instruction in the manual to open this lid though

Hi @ivanptr

I don't think that lid is supposed to be taken off as there is no reference on the cleaning manual. If it is permanently attached do not use force to take it off. I suggest keep using warm-hot water to pump out the clogged paint channels in the sprayer. I don't recommend using chemicals as they will damage the interior mechanism of the sprayer.

but we already sprayed it with a lot of soapy water, all visiable part, vents , filter and ports clear, just the nozzle part (in blue circle) is partly blocked and cannot be cleaned by needle or tiny brush

we are thinking to submerge the part (in red) in solvent ? like alcohol or ammonia.

but now hearing u said it might damage the sprayer, we cant make up our mind

As I have mentioned strong chemicals might damage the precise internal mechanism of the sprayer. I propose using thick fishing line to try and clean the nozzle of the sprayer.

In the meantime, let me ask my paint specialist at the store and see if they have more suggestions on how to clean your sprayer. As soon as I have more information, I'll get back to you.

Hi @ivanptr,

Take a look at the images of my Wagner spray gun below. See the white needle inside the red circle that the trigger operates? You need to clean around it, between it and the blue sheath. Paint gets sucked up from the paint reservoir, travels up the tube, and then out the blue sheath surrounding the white needle. Paint builds up in that gap directly around the needle where I've placed the red arrows. Take some wire and dig out any stuck paint in there.

The inner workings of your machine won't be exactly the same. What they do have in common is that they must be cleaned thoroughly after every use. Any paint that clogs up the mechanisms will cause the paint spraying not to work. When they are working, they are fantastic, but they do get clogged easily if you don't clean them out. I've neglected to clean mine out on several occasions. The only remedy was elbow grease and cleaning out every port and mechanism with warm soapy water until it ran again. You can see the damaged plastic around my nozzle, that's due to the wear involved with cleaning it out after every use.

If you can show me similar pictures of your nozzle unit, I can point out any paint that I think is blocking the mechanism.

the most tricky part is inside the nozzle where we cant dissemble like @MitchellMc did with wagner

so we sticked a tiny bottle brush into the vent , and kept pressing and releasing the trigger for 30 times to make surface of that internal part scratch with our brush

we also poured some Diggers Methylated Spirits into that vent before using bottle brush, seems it did have some effect on thinning the dried paint

like @EricL said before, we need to be cautious of stronger chemical , so we didnt use acetone cos google says it can damage plastic and we are not sure if our ozito sprayer can withstand that

That's great to hear @ivanptr!

Remember to fill the reservoir up with warm water before you finish with the machine and spray it through to clear out any paint. Also, whenever you as stopping for a couple of hours or have been spraying for a long time, clean out the internal parts so the paint doesn't dry in the unit and build up.
