How to use AEG compound saw?

Just bought a new AEG (PS254DB) compound saw.

The blade is square, however when it’s pulled forward, the blade hits the tongue.

using a 10inch Irwin blade.

any suggestions on fixes?

Morning @johnnyl86

Initial thought was fence adjustment - but no.

Re: Compound Saw

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @johnnyl86. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about the AEG compound saw.

I'm sorry you're having issues with your new saw.

Do you recall whether the original blade, before you changed it, hit the tongue (throat plate)? There is an adjustment to the throat plate, but it appears it's already set at max. At this point, it should clear the blade easily, and you should have the ability to adjust it even closer for a near-zero clearance gap.

A couple of things we can check:

  • Turn the machine off at the wall and remove the power plug so the tool is entirely disconnected from power. I see you've checked for square in your image, but can you please rotate the blade as well, whilst checking square, to verify that it's not skewed?

  • What is the thickness of the Irwin blade? I've been looking, and I can't find those details. I would need to call Irwin after the weekend to verify. The AEG machine suits blades 1.8 mm / 2.5 mm. If the Irwin blade is thicker, that could be a reason it's hitting

I think the most likely situation is that the blade is skewed. However, we can't rule out that there could be some type of misalignment in the saw, and our in-store team would be more than happy to take a look at it for you and assess it under warranty. In some more budget-friendly machines, it's not uncommon for the blade to hit the throat plate, and it simply cuts it and self-clears, but for an AEG with an adjustable throat plate, that seems unusual to me. The biggest indicator that something is off is that the blade clears at the rear but not at the front.

I would suggest installing the original blade and checking the clearances. If it clears easily, then we can presume the issue has something to do with the Irwin blade or its installation.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

See something interesting? Give it the thumbs up!

Re: Compound Saw

Thanks. I did put the original blade on. Continued hitting the tongue. Brought it back and the team at Bunnings exchanged the saw. No issues with the new saw. Thanks for the reply.
