My partner and I have got a friend who’s doing it a bit tough at the moment. She mentioned that she needed her dining table replacing, so we decided to make her one for Xmas.
If you want a starter project that looks fairly impressive, this is a really good one to attempt. It only took us three hours and we bought everything from Bunnings.
My only warning, is that it’ll cost you over $200 to make, even if you have screws, brushes and varnish already waiting in the shed.
The top is made from two 1800mm x 405mm hardwood panels, that we joined together with wooden dowels and some basic wood glue. We then reinforced that with four joining plates.
The legs were made from two 1200 x 600mm hardwood panels. We kept them 600m wide, but shortened them to 850mm. The off-cuts will come in handy for something!
We then used eight black angle brackets (two either side of each leg) to secure things together.
Finally we used some basic gloss varnish on the top, and some darker stain on the legs. I like to think it accentuates the top and gives it a floating feel.
Only took us two or three hours, including a coat of varnish - and she’s very happy with her new table.
