How to make a automatic watering system?

I am making a DIY project called a seedling planting system and I am stuck in this specific part of the project. The watering system. Is there a way that when a planter pulls out the lever (to the left) , somehow the water from the jerry can run through the PVC pipes and a spray nozzle connected to the end of it? Maybe some sort of switch? I don't know how to make this part of the watering system automatic...

The aim of that is to water the seedlings in the seedling container to where are the pipes are running through....

Your watering system looks very clever. I believe all it needs is a source of power. You can either use a hand pump like the Nylex 2L Rethink Hand Pump Sprayer or an Aquapro AP210 Tabletop Water Feature Pump. You'll need to rethink your design with the water flowing through as it might be too strong.

I suggest drawing the pumping system on paper and describing how each piece will work with the other parts of your watering/seeding system. For example, when the hand pump is pumped full of air water will get pushed out of the outlet when the release switch is activated. The water then goes through the plastic pipe and lands in the seed catch.

If you have a vision of the device you want to create, I suggest breaking it down to its core components. We can then make recommendations on what parts will be suitable for your machine.

Thank you for reaching out. I appreciate the suggestion of using a water pump. However, my goal is to implement an automatic watering system. I envision utilizing the water pump in conjunction with automation, although I'm unsure how to achieve this at present. One idea I had is to incorporate a switch mechanism, where pulling out the lever (the rectangle on the left) could activate the watering system through a connected wire. Alternatively, I'm open to exploring ways to automate the seedling dropping process. I believe it's crucial to minimize manual tasks for tree planters, hence the focus on automation. Ultimately, the aim of this project is to reduce the physical labor involved in planting seedlings to aid in deforestation efforts. Therefore, I aim to make at least one component, if not all, automatic.

Is there anyway I can talk to someone in person to explain in detail as its hard to do over text?

Your explanation is quite clear to me. But if you wish to speak to someone that can give you onsite recommendations immediately, I suggest visiting your local store and speaking to the hardware specialist or plumbing specialist. They will be able to refer parts to you and you can quickly tell if it will work or not.

My best advice is to bring your plans and diagrams with you so that the team member you speak to will be able to understand how you want your machine to work.

Hi Eric,

I'm trying to add a auger with a motor onto the system in SketchUp however, I'm trying to figure out how to attach a auger with a motor in real life as I cannot quite find any information online neither how to research. The auger will need to work in such a way that it drills the soil in the exact spacing as its between the holes on the top of the timber sheet. Could you please help me out. :).

Looking at the picture below, I want to add the auger to the bottom right side of the system.

You know I love all things automation and electrical but I would tend to keep it KISS method here.

A pressure pack water container, a inline button valve and then the tube after the valve with a stopper and pin holes over the feeders.

Pump the pack to build the pressure, after dropping the seed press the valve button for time "X" .

That means no electrical connection, mobile, reduced cost.

My idea involves using a jerry can to hold the water, with pipes extending from the can to connect with PVC pipes below the timber sheet. I envision incorporating a valve within the PVC pipe so that when a seedling drops through, it triggers the flow of water. However, I'm unsure how to execute this mechanism.

If you are wanting to detect seeds dropping through then in turn trigger the water to activate and flow not matter how fast or slow then you are going to have to develop something with an Arduino for simplicity on the microcontroller / microcomputer world.

I have just run my thoughts pattern through my AI and here is the output.

Building a device to detect when seeds drop through a chute and subsequently activate a water valve via a relay is a feasible project that can be accomplished with an Arduino, a sonic sensor for seed detection, and an optocoupler relay to control the water valve. Here is a high-level overview of how you could approach this project, including the components you might use:

### Components Needed:

1. **Arduino Uno or similar**: Acts as the brain of the operation, processing the input from the sonic sensor and controlling the relay.

How to make a manual lever-operated system like a railway switch?

According to the below picture, as said above, I want to make a lever mechanism that opens way for the seedlings to fall through the PVC pipes and into the soil. I want the lever to work like a railway switch which is about the waist height of a person, so when the person pushes the lever forward (shown in #2), it opens the lever that is hinged at the end of the PVC pipes to open and when retracted back, the lever hinged is closed. (shown in #3) Is there anyway I can make this work in real life as I'm not sure where to begin with? The PVC pipes will be held on to the timber sheet and the lever that's about waist height is connected to the entire system that moves this system forward as well as when pushed front and back again, it opens way for seedlings. (Apologies for the bad drawing, came up with this idea on the spot)

I think I understand what you are after. This mechanisim could have some "V" shapped pieces of timber to channel the seeds to the PV pipes below when opened they would slide down tothe V point.

The green is the handle and is fixed at one point at the base so it can pivot.

The Pink is a metal pin or thick dowel

The red outline is an arc cut in the timber side.

When the level is pushe forwards the pin would travel the arc on the way down, lowering the hinged lid.

The arc may not be a true coffee cup arc (I am not sure so you may need to experiment with the idea) so the curve may need to be wider then the pin.

Do you have an overall diagram - of the entire unit you propose? There's mention of wheels and levers.

To me, if you want to minimise labour inducing actions for the employee pushing(?) this thing, the last thing he would want to do is push and pull a lever every time we wanna drop seeds?

Is there a way of synchronizing the rotation of the wheels with the dropping of seed and water - all in one action?

So all he (or she) has to do is aim the cart(?) and push?

How are you dropping the precise amount of seed from those PVC pipes?

Just coffee thoughts. Keep us informed.

Since I am just starting, I haven't yet focused on making the system work on wheels as that's my last priority. I am currently focusing on planting, drilling and watering mechanism through this Seedling Planting System. Not to mention, I had well thought about that idea before (seeds through a wheel, as it was one of the existing solutions out there), however, it was too hard to make an automatic system all by myself at the very start. Synchronising wheels with seeds is not a problem, however, these are seedlings and not seeds so it was harder to come up with an idea that could possibly do that. I believe, with your help maybe I can get to something automatic. Your help would be greatly appreciated.!!

I'm happy to stay the distance with your 'Seedler' - but I'm just not seeing the "automation" in your project. When you Google I see a lotta people just driving tractors.

Just outta curiosity - do you have to physically build this machine and have it working before the teacher will grade it? Or is it just a paper/computer exercise?

When does this have to be completed?

I know nothing about seedlings. They look fragile?

To me - I would ditch the auger concept. Possibly just spring-loaded sharpened rods quickly punching a V shaped hole.

Only needs to be a small hole - assumption.

The 'machine' moves a precise distance so the loading tubes are over the holes. They have to be spot on. Are you familiar with the Norden bombsight?

Drop three (why three?) seedlings down the tubes - by hand? Or have you devised some sort of conveyor system?

To my mind this must be very close to the holes. In fact what distance are we looking at?

Based on this I see absolutely no need for trap doors, levers, bomb-bays or the like.

Again, the 'machine' moves a precise distance - and you press a button and a battery powered pump delivers a squirt of water. This in itself would be heavy?

I have a thousand questions, but genuinely would like to help and understand the nuances of your project.

I believe that's a lie as well, I think you're very clever after all!

This is a school project designed for my HSC in year 12. I have to physically build it and it will be marked for my HSC by the HSC markers as they need to see this working. I have approximately 4 months left considering its due in August, with the side hustle of completing an overall portfolio!!

The seedlings used by my target market (tree planters) is in the picture below.

I like your idea of making the machine moving a specific distance and everything, however I'm quite not sure where I should start from. My original idea was to somehow channel the seedlings to the PVC pipes and make the system move by itself through ultrasonic sensors, however the drilling mechanism became an obstacle and didn't really know how I could make this work in real life. Which is exactly why I decided to make some parts automatic which pressing a button for the water to release water for a determined amount of time, and manual for pulling the lever to open way for the seedlings to follow through and move the system with the lever at the same time.

Is there anyway I can make the seedligns fall through from the wheels (not sure how) and still keep the watering process automatic through coding by arduino?

However, I would like to see my entire system just based on automatic process without the need of manual process at all, although not feasible, I'd really like some help in this project as well as physically building it too!

I found this impressive machine and had a look at a few YouTubes. Obviously the terrain is also tough, which somehow your invention is going to have to overcome.

I like their solution of 'plowing' a simple channel for the seedlings to drop into but this would take some serious grunt. Have you any ideas how your machine will propel itself and provide traction in this landscape?

I looked at that website- thats really impressive and now I want to make something rigorous like that and again of course not sure how can I get that done.

So far, the movement of my system is going to be done through coding by the use of arduino and ultrasonic sensors or either manually pulled. To overcome the hard terrain, I've come up with tractor wheels so far bur again that's my last priority, I am currently focusing on better developing my system into an advanced version unlike a basic system with basic knowledge.
