Does the direction of skillion roof matter?

More or a.info question then a how to do question about skillion roofed firewood storage

I just finished building one out of pallets I got for free and spare hardwood boards I had. The only thing I did differently which wasn't intentional was the angle of the roof is lower at the front

Would this be any disadvantage vs water running off from the back ? I noticed most videos of this design have the water running down at the back instead

I want to have my storage sitting against a shed wall

If its a big deal I'll.change it but if not I'll leave it

Hi @PatDIY_Dad,

Thank you for sharing the photo of your firewood storage, it looks great.

Considering you are planning to have it up against a shed wall, my first thought was that you would want the water to run away from it, which it would in the current orientation.

Ultimately the orientation of the roof wouldn't have too much of an effect, but it should not negatively affect the existing shed, which could happen if you are directing water towards it, so I'd keep it as it is.

Hi @PatDIY_Dad ,

The only disadvantage that I can imagine is that the flow of water off the roof toward the front may blow in and wet your stored wood. The solution to that would be to add a gutter along the front of the roof to take the water to the side.

It will be negligible. Probably get more wind blowing rain through the gapes because of the position I plan to put it in

I've finished making it but had a last minute idea to make the wood last longer outside would it be worth painting it with some kind of decking oil

The firewood that will be stored in there will be used for cooking in my pizza oven so don't want anything that can contaminate the firewood

Id definently go with some decking oil to give it a longer same colour life. Once dry I dont see any oil being transfered to anything else. Ive scooted around my deck building things on it and never have oil transfer to my clothes as an example.

There are some more green type oils but they dont last as long. Id go fulls trength as you have used recyled pallets 🙂

I made a floor 'carpet' under outdoor covered areas using pallets that kept things like a cement mixer, air compressor and so forth off the ground.

Within two years I discovered the pallets were full of termites. I guess wood, moisture and earth = woodeaters?

"Wood" the traditional pallet be treated for termites?

🙂 I do hear you but the effort you have in may last twice the life of what it will without any paint/oil. You could use exterior paint, my suggestion is just a preferance. Maybe hit up a neighbour as they could have a little of some. I know I do lol and would be very happy to give it away or for a nominal fee say $10. Its just going to sit there and never be used is my thinking.
