How to repaint outdoor table to match chairs?

We have the Rimini outdoor set. After a few years the table started to show a bit of wear and tear so I decided to sand and oil it. As a result it looks completely different than the chairs and doesn't have a nice finished look anymore. My wife is not happy about the result. Sanding and oiling all the chairs would be a lot of effort and not give the desired finished look. How do I get the table restored/repainted to the original colour/style? The wood is acacia but I'm not sure what the finish is, I think it's not just paint. If someone could let me know what the finish is I can try to find a matching colour.

Hi @Victor2,

It looks like an extremely light, natural coloured coating, possibly a wax, although I can't say I'm aware of a wax that can be used on exterior furniture.

Unfortunately, it would be incredibly difficult to perfectly replicate the finish without knowing what they used in the first place, and at best, we would be guessing.

For this reason, your best option is likely to contact the manufacturer to see if they have information on the original finish that was used.

To my eyes you did a magnificent job on the table.

The chairs look good.

I'd have a beer with you on that table and never point out any differences, not that I even would notice.

Looks like a light limewash to me but I'm no expert. An example of the look of lime wash can be seen on the floorboarde here....

The first part of your problem will be getting the oil out of the timber before you can recoat it successfully. I bought an oiled timber table set, that covered all sitters in oil. Given that oil soaks into the wood, it isn't a case of just sanding it. We used dishwashing liquid, scrubbing brushes, rags and water. But that may change the look of the surface your timber. You could then try lime washing it to match the original, testing on the underside first to get the colour right.

I suspect that to get a match with the chairs, you may have to redo everything. Otherwise, try to find a colour stain that is completely different, but which complements the chair colour.

I'd consult a colour expert or an artistic person for that. Sometimes the people who work at the paint section of your local Bunnings have an interest and an eye for colours. (There is a lady at my local Bunnings who does anyway. I have to catch her when she's on shift though, because others just know how to follow a paint chart's formula.) Or try a paint store. Maybe a reader on here could suggest a suitable complementary colour....

Sounds like I've got the following options that I can investigate:
- contact the manufacturer to find out what finish it is

- investigate light lime wash finishes

- Find a complementary colour stain that will go with the chairs

- In any case if I wanted to restain, I should remove the oil again
