How to build window fly screens?

Hi guys,

I have casement windows in my house and am wanting to DIY some fly screens. Ideally they will be able to either slide across or pulldown in order to open/shut the window. Wondering if you have any ideas, tips or tricks that may help me start my planning?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about window fly screens.

The store carries the Pfeiffer adjustable window flyscreen, Cyclone window screening system and the Pillar fly screen frame from which you can build your own static flyscreen. I'm sorry but none of these systems are sliding in nature or used in a sliding framing system. The only adaptable set is the Pillar flyscreen which can be installed outside or inside on the condition that the window frame has enough space to accommodate the frame. It is kept in place using the Rolltrak Zinc Flyscreen Flush Swivel Clip. It is meant to cover the entire window and not be moved.

If you could add some images of the windows, that would assist our members in providing advice. Let me know if you need a hand uploading pictures.

I note you mention sliding might be an option. You can construct your own track system for standard frames using aluminium C-channel.

I have done this before a couple of times about 10 years ago.

My concept was for a casement window you need a casement flyscreen much like a entry door with screen door.

For both jobs I simply made up the screens using the usual stuff from Bunnings.

On the first job I used flyscreen spring loaded pins.

On the 2nd job had to change to small hinges so not as convenient to remove for cleaning.

Hi @DylanK

I made flyscreens for my casement windows a couple of years ago with a fixed top section and hinged lower one to be able to open and close the windows. You can put the hinged section as high or as low as you like. I have more details on how I made them on Bunnings Workshop here.

I couldn't hinge above my sink because the tap was in the way, so that section is held in with swivel clips top and bottom and I just lift it out when I want to open or close the windows, most of the time they stay open anyway.
