I want to be able to secure my external wooden garage door when open. The gap between external wall and open door is 26cm, thus too wide for a cabin hook. I'm thinking of using an anchor point on the wall, an anchor point on the door and linking the two with carabiner snap hooks on either end of a short chain. Do you have any other suggestions?

Your idea of using a short chain with anchor points and carabiners would certainly work and would be a simple, robust solution.
Looking at your photos, I noticed that while there's a 26cm gap between the wall and the handle side of the door, the gap is much smaller closer to the hinge side. Is there anything preventing you from installing a magnetic door stop in that location instead?
A magnetic door stop would hold the door open without needing a long cabin hook or chain, and with the smaller gap near the hinges, it may be well within its operating range. It would also be a little neater and quicker to use than clipping a chain on each time.
If there isn't enough room for a magnetic stop, then I think your chain and carabiner idea is a perfectly practical alternative.

I agree with @MitchellMc that a latch that you don't have to fiddle with is a preferable choice, such as a magnetic catch.
Another alternative to consider, given that magnetic catches can get rusty outdoors, is to use a cheap, plastic catch that will hold and release the door, firmly and easily and won't rust. It can be fitted near the door handle (they come in various lengths) will ensure that it doesn't hit the wall in a wind. (As will the magnetic catch.)
The proviso for this alternative is that you don't get too much harsh sun on that wall. UV rays can make plastic products brittle after a few years, but given that these are about $2 to $5 each, you could by 2 and just replace it (4 screws, same holes) if it ever become too brittle.
I have used this catch for my own garage door for at least 5 years with no problems, but mine swings inwards.

I'm for the ball and socket magnet variety @LouiseD1 - can't remember the brand but purchased from Bunnings. I have one on an internal door, one on an external outside gate and two elaborate ones for screen doors. Easy to install and very strong. Just a thought. Cheers!
