How to make Emu Wire gate self-closing and with key lock?

Hi,

I have an Emu Wire Industries pedestrian gate mounted to a wooden post.  I am seeking advice on how to make it self-closing.  Most of the products that I looked at in store did not seem intended for a circular steel tube framed gate.  Any suggestions how to go about this?

Also, I’d like to add a keyed lock, that could be locked and unlocked from both sides.  Most locks I looked at seemed to be suited to metal posts and square tubing.  Any suggestions appreciated.

I was thinking of the spring that @EricL's suggestion showcases but when I saw @JacobZ's my first thought was "I want one" lol That hinge looks outstanding and looks a lot less intrusive. If you want a tradition spring on the Emu Wire Gate (didnt know it was called that) then @EricL's is the way I would go. I have not had experience of installing either types :) But the video with the more modern Sure close really helps explain how to adjust the gates mechanism.

Just to add to Jacob's excellent suggestion, I also recommend modifying your gate in the more traditional manner. I propose installing a piece of pine decking panel across the gate front and use that as a mounting point for the gate return and lock. The panel can be painted in white so that it blends in with the gate. I've placed a sample image below rendered using AI to give you an idea of how it can be assembled. Please note that this is just a sample image and not meant to be the final look of the assembly.

The post surface on the left will need to be modified so that the deadlocks bolt can reach over to the post preventing it from opening.

They got back to me with the following information -

"If the fence post is square then the customer can fit a standard

which is a lockable latch from both sides and then if the gate post is round (either 35 , 41 or 48 mm diameter) we can supply round post striker as per below.

For self-closing hinges to suit the same scenario, again without knowing round post diameter the only solution we have are the

…the hinges can be adapted to fit a square post by simply not fitting the supplied round post adapters which are used on the round post gate side."

There are two different sizes for the TruClose Round Heavy-Duty Hinges, so again, we'd need to know the outer diameter of the round gate frame to know which model is required.

When you have the dimensions for your gate frame, the Special Orders team at your local store will be able to assist with ordering the right components to suit.
