How do I add another shelf in between the existing shelves?

I have just moved into my new house. These days they make your pantry shelves out of melamine. The shelves are too tall to make use of the space, so I want to add a shelf in between the existing shelves.

Currently the shelves are one piece of melamine that sits on melamine supports against the wall and is supported by a pole/post. There is a perpendicular piece of melamine that makes up the corner, and this is also supported by melamine at the wall and joined with the first piece by a plastic corner bit that I found on the Bunnings website, and glued/siliconed to the other piece.

I am fairly sure I can use some wood as a support in the way they have done here, and I found the little corner joins to join one piece of melamine together for the right angled parts, the only trouble I am having is that I can't seem to find anything that will suit as a support rod in the way they have here. Does anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about adding an extra shelf in your pantry.

I propose having a quick look at this discussion - How to add shelves to this nook? by @Kimbo_8. It has some visual guides you can use to design your extra shelf. In regard to the support post, I suggest using either Metal Mate 25.4 x 25.4 x 1mm x 3m White Aluminium Square Tube or Porta 18 x 18mm 2.4m Clear Pine Dressed Board. There are other timber sizes available, but they are rectangular in shape.

An alternative to the plastic footing is to use an angle bracket such as the Carinya 30 x 30 x 17 x 1.8mm White Reinforcing Angle Bracket. It can be mounted on the non-visible side of the post away from direct view.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask.

That is a fantastic find! I must admit that is very close looking to the fitting you have in your pantry. However, please note that the rail holder is used in a horizontal manner and keeps the rail in it due to its position. Putting it in a vertical manner might cause the pipe to slide out as there is technically nothing holding it in place. But in saying that you could give it a go and possibly use some adhesive to keep the rail in place. It is a very clever alternative.

Would it be possible to get a photo of your pantry? It would make it easier to come up with some ideas.

Before I realised it wasnt your photo I was thinking of hanging shelves underneath the existing shelves (tho weight wise Im not sure if it wouldnt warp the shelves. I have seen hanging style baskets that slip over the shelf above that could work. Also vegetable/softdrink can styled rails where the cans can be placed inside and they roll along and down like a vending machine.

The other idea that went through my head if you have the space (what is teh distance between your existing shelves height wise?) is a narrower shelf, half as wide as the existing ones, this will allow you to maximise your space and not burry old food stuff in that back :) You could easily use that 20*20mm timber as the support posts that @EricL suggested. The half shelves could then be replicated all the way up. Well Id actually suggest to do only the lower few shelves and leave the large gap ones for cerals oir tall items.

I dont like shelving out to the max, mostly because of pantry moth :/ Its a pain to get rid of when it happens. I also find if I can see a horizontal surface then I will fill it :) The oldest thing I found last time I was tidying was a use by 2013 dated item :o

Full width, narrow shelves are a great way to start an "ancient food" collection, unless it is drawers or at least, slide out shelves. The half width shelves will be more useful overall.

You beat me to the punch identifying the wardrobe hanging rail. If you look at the Lugna range, you can more economically buy longer lengths of oval hanging rail in both white and chrome and then cut it to length with a hacksaw. The end caps are also available in white and chrome.

Your existing supports should pop out inwards to the shelves. Then you can cut them to the new lengths once the intermediate shelves are in place.

Being a cheapskate I'd pop-rivet a bracket at the back of the existing column. Mimic the back/wall supports as seen above then cut out a rebate in the melimine board to accommodate the column cross-section dimensions which then rests on the bracket.

As per previous commenters, we can give more appropriate advice if you provide the dimensions of the pantry including the depth of the shelves.

I'm a big fan/proponent of drawers...as someone said, shelves are an easy way to accumulate out of date items but more 8mportantly, drawers are much easier to work with. Depending on your ability, I'd look to replacing at least part of the shelving with drawers. The frame can be made from melamine panels (various depths e.g. approx 450mm) and fitted with wire baskets of various heights. Using drawer runners makes for smoother access but adds cost. I tried to find plastic tracks for the baskets but couldn't so timber could be used.

When I reno'd my kitchen I installed a pantry cabinet bcos I don't have a walk-in & fitted it out with wire drawers...it works great (see photo below). Added some thin (3mm) board on the base of some baskets for small bottles etc but not needed for larger items where I use storage containers & jars for tea bags, flour, rice etc

You could use a cabinet too rather than building your own but it's more expensive altho much easier & quicker.
