Recessed TV feature wall with EasyVJ panels

A plain brick wall was transformed into a gorgeous feature using easyVJ panels.

The project

At my wife's request I got to work on this recessed TV feature wall in our living room and we're so happy with how it turned out. It may come as a surprise, but this isn't out of reach for the average D.I.Yer so don't be scared to give this one a go.

To create the niches, I just fixed a 90mm timber batten to the very edge of our standard flat brick wall to extend it. I then filled the gap and join as both materials are pencil round, sanded back and repainted. Seamless. The bottom of the conduits and the powerpoints are also recessed and hidden behind the TV unit.

Panels: Easycraft easyVJ panels. Made-to-order with 63mm spacing.

ProjectPete also used Easycraft easyVJ 63mm panelling on his kitchen island and painted with British Paints Mossy Road.

Bunnings Workshop member kingj11 used three 1m wall panels painted in Dulux Paris Green Matte to create this stunning feature wall and finished it with a Tasmanian Oak trim.

Hello this is so bloody beautiful this is exactly what I want in my lounge room my husband has been trying to convince me but I couldn’t put the picture and layout together but this is beautiful can u let me know every step to recess the tv in the wall like that pls. Where r the cords how do u access the cords also what is behind that wall to.

@Mwilson I'm glad you love it! It's certainly been a hit and a project I'm really proud of.

At a high level...

Frame/box the wall our with 90x35 pine as you total protrusion from wall will then equal 90mm + thickness of chosen panelling and adhesive. You need to make sure it's enough to encase your TV based on how much it protrudes from the wall with your TV bracket. If it's more than 90-100mm I'd suggest getting a new slimline TV bracket.

The TV recess should be made big enough to have a 50-70mm border around the TV. This gives ample room to put the TV on and off the wall. Note - You won't be able to increase the size of your TV so make sure you get the TV size right that you'll be happy with for years to come.

The cords are hidden with in-wall conduits. If you don't already have these they're not too difficult to do yourself but there are some risks involved. For this part, pay a sparky about $450 to do them for you - will save a lot of time, hassle and mess.

We're in Perth WA where 99% of houses are brick. You can achieve this on a timber stud frame wall or brick - in fact a stud wall would be a bit easier as you don't have to drill into brick so many times.

Frame/trim your recesses with 20x12 or 20x12 ali angle trims from Bunnings. Prime them first then paint to match.

This should give you something you start with 👍

Hi, looks fantastic! I can see you went over the top of the skirting boards - did you pack out the top to make it level? I am wanting to do the same and cover the skirting boards too. Thanks

@Meg22 I removed the skirting on the wall before framing the wall out with 90mm timber. The 90mm gives a consistent depth over the whole wall.

Installing wall panelling would be a fantastic start to your D.I.Y. journey. You'll need a minimal amount of tools, and just about all the steps a very straightforward. Our members will be with you throughout the project, offering advice and encouragement. If you get stuck, I'm sure we'll be able to help you with anything you need.

@ProjectPete we're looking at installing these panels onto our brick wall that has gyprock already (typical Perth house). What do you suggest we do to secure these to the wall? Any advise would be great! Thanks.

Good afternoon @ProjectPete

Man the things you see when you scroll through projects! I love this thinking outside the square, I really wouldnt have thought of doing this on a brick wall. It just wouldnt have occured to me. It gives depth and is a lot more please to the eye. How did you come up withthe idea?
