What type of lawn mower should I get?

I’ve just bought my first house and need to invest in a lawn mower. We have an average sized backyard and there’s also some grass out the front but my needs are pretty modest. I have no idea what to look for. Can anyone give me some advice? I’m particularly confused on the benefits/drawbacks of 2-stroke versus 4-stroke. And are electric mowers now worth considering?

Hi Shane,

I work for Bunnings but I also only recently bought my first lawn mower and I have to recommend a cordless battery powered mower. It may not have the same guts as a 4 stroke mower but the convenience of no cords and no petrol is a winner.

I only have a very small area of grass so was happy with the Ozito - you may be happy with that but you can also get a Victa or Ryobi cordless mower as well.

I recently bought an electric lawnmower from Bunnings. I purchased the Ozito 1400W - and I am happy with the purchase. I no longer need to worry about having petrol on hand, or the hassle of the pull start.

I just need to remember to keep the extension cord out of the way LOL

Good question, I’ll be interested to hear people’s opinions. I see plenty of manufacturers are now selling electric mowers with the same interchangeable Lithium battery pack as other tools. This seems like a convenient and smart option. I still have a two-stroke that's about 10 years old but I do like the idea of ditching the petrol mower. It’s messy and can be a little inconvenient having to get petrol in a jerry can, mix it with oil, etc. It is also starting to blow a lot of smoke. I bought a two-stroke because I had heard they were a little easier to maintain in that you don't need to have seperate oil and fuel top-ups.

I grew up with an engineer dad who demanded perfection in his lawns down to the millimetre, so I never really got a chance to have a go on his trusty petrol mower... but I do have a bit of experience with battery-powered mowers.

I wouldn't recommend getting one if it's the only battery-powered tool you're going to own, because you'll spend half your time waiting for batteries to charge before you can finish the job. I'd only go the battery option if you're planning on buying a few different tools with batteries to share between them. That way, you're always using one battery while you charge another.

If you do decide to go down the battery path, there are a few manufacturers offering the 'one battery for all your tools' type range so I'd shop around and see which one suits your needs the most.

I purchased a Ryobi 36v battery mower from Bunnings, the best thing ever I just love it, it works hard, no 'pussyfooting around" I love that I can mow my lawn myself. I don't have the strength anymore to pull start things!

Used the new mower for the first time on the weekend. It is fantastic. So light and easy to maneuver. No fumes and very quiet. The grass was a little wet from recent rain and it coped with no problems so it certainly seems powerful enough for my needs. Battery is quick to recharge and lasted for enough time to thoroughly mow the lawn and nature strip. Very happy with it. Don't think I could ever go back to petrol now. The only downside is that the cutting width isn't as wide as my previous mower but as its much lighter and easier to push I think it was probaby quicker than my old mower anyway.

Hey there

When i laid my grass 2 yrs ago i had no idea what i was getting into. Lawn sort of became a hobbie for me. I started off with a 4 stroke rotary mower that ran off normal petrol and a bunnings manual push lawn cutter with a bag. After awhile i decided to test run a battery rotary and did the same job. Battery charges on electricity and no power chords down side just not much guts and less run time where petrol more guts and longer run time and the manual push cutter well that all depends on your fitness. I eventually borrowed a cylinder mower (look up in google for description) and got a nice cut that was more even like a bowling green. All comes down to how much you wanna spend and how much pride you wanna take. Higher end will be the cylinder mower followed by battery then petrol then the manual push.

Depends on size and complexity of lawn, simple and small lawn (electrix or battery is fine)
if your lawn is big or bumpy or on slope, definately a 4 stroke victa or masport would do.
2 stroke vs 4 stroke (2 stroke you need to mix oil and petrol together) 4 stroke you have normal 95 unleaded petrol and separate compartment for 4stroke oil 🙂

Let me tag @Deanna to make them aware of your kind comments. Battery technology and capacity have come a long way since it first started. Battery-powered mowers start at 18V all the way up to 58V and higher. They are now built to handle almost any lawn condition.

Hi,

I have 70sqm area of grass. With my budget of 400 mark, what is the best option to buy Battery or Electric or petrol lawn mower?

I had cheap Aldi battery based and it used to give few headache with battery charging and what not.

I could do grass cut if it is wet or little above average.

What is your suggestion?

I propose looking at investing in an Ozito PXC 18V 300mm Brushless Lawn Mower 4.0Ah Kit PXCLMK-1418. I have this unit at home and is very reliable, easy to charge and can cut through tall grass when done in the recommended manner. It is rated for a lawn area of 200m squared so should be able to manage 70 square meters. The best part is that its battery is included in the Ozito PXC range and is therefore compatible with all the tools in that range such as the drills, circular saws and gardening equipment.

I bought an electric Ozito about three years ago for my reasonable lawn area, and I have been extremely happy with it. It's lightweight, easy to use, and I have had no problems with it at all. Just remember to keep the electric cord out of the way of the blades! Being electric means no more petrol cans, and replacing batteries for the battery operated mowers can be expensive. Enjoy mowing! I do!

I'm needing to buy a lawn mower and wiper snipper.

I need something that isn't to heavy because I have a bad back and a big back yard.

I'm also wondering if these mowers/trimmers/edges are good, because they look lite.

I'd prefer something that doesn't use petrol and is small because I would need to store it inside as I don't have a shed 😢.

I would appreciate any advice I get because I have never owned a lawn mower or wiper snipper before.

If you’re after something lightweight, easy to use, and that you can store indoors, I’d definitely suggest looking at the Ryobi 18V range of garden equipment. The 18V mowers and trimmers are generally lighter than their 36V counterparts, and they’re perfect for small to medium lawns. For a larger yard, you may need to pop the battery back on charge halfway through, or just split the mowing over two sessions. For example, front yard one day, backyard the next. The batteries are also compatible with the whole range of Ryobi One+ tools.

A typical 18V mower kit comes with a 4Ah battery, which gives you around 25 minutes of run time. That’s usually enough for a decent section of lawn, as long as you’re keeping the grass maintained rather than letting it grow too long. The same battery can also power the 18V line trimmer, which is lightweight but still handles tougher grasses like buffalo without much trouble.

If you’d like to finish your whole lawn in one go, you could consider stepping up to the Ryobi 36V mower, which has a longer run time (up to 50 minutes) and a slightly wider cut. It is a little heavier than the 18V but still far easier to manoeuvre than a petrol mower, and it starts instantly at the push of a button; no fuel, no pulling cords.

Another option, if you want something ultra-light, would be a corded electric mower like the Ozito 240V range. They’re very light and you never have to worry about charging batteries, but the trade-off is having to manage an extension cord while you mow.

For someone with a bad back, I’d say the 18V or 36V Ryobi kits are probably the best balance of weight, ease of use, and storage. My wife uses our 36V Ryobi mower and loves it. She finds it much easier to push than our old petrol mower and appreciates that it starts with just a trigger pull.

With regard to the corded Ozito mower that's why I'm asking for photos of the grass areas.

If the areas are fairly open I consider that is you best choice, as you start mowing say to the right the lead will generally follow on the left.

Use a good quality extension lead and please also purchase this.

Arlec Single Outlet Safety Switch.

Technically that is a Residual Current Device (RCD) with a common name Safety Switch.

Detects abnormal electrical conditions and will turn off the power much faster (shorter time period) than a power box circuit breaker.

I use to own a petrol driven lawnmower, but since purchasing an electric Ozito, I wouldn't return to the heavier lawnmowers. I fully agree with AlanM52 about using a good quality extension cord and a safety switch - "better to be safe than sorry". I also own an Ozito whipper snipper, and again I am very happy with it. I am a lady in my seventies, with an "unhappy" back at times, and quite a fair amount of lawn to mow, but with the Ozito being so light, easy to use, and able to cope with the larger lawns as well as the small ones, then mowing these days is a breeze. Just keep the electric cord out of the way - I wear it as a fashion item, draped over my shoulder! Happy mowing!

I'll keep that in mind 😁. Ozito has a good selection of cheaper tools that just keep going and going. I had an ozito dremel I bought for my son which lasted forever. I didn't want to hand it over to him.
