Laundry transformed into utility room

A new benchtop and storage turned a dated laundry into a functional workspace for crafts with an indoor herb garden.

The project

We had talked about making our laundry a more useful space for about 10 years. A plumbing upgrade upstairs necessitated us amending the plumbing in the laundry so we got inspired.

Now we have phone and laptop charging, ample storage for our everyday bags, herbs on the windowsill, and an area for crafting and sewing as well as laundry. We're very happy with the end result!

The benchtop is a wood-look laminate in a 3.2 m length, so there are no seams. For a wet area and crafting the laminate offers a more practical solution with the warmth of a wood.

The shelves are real Oak and we used bamboo accessories.

The herbs love this spot and the possums cant get to them!

Congratulation @goofygaffney Amazing outcomes.

Could I please ask you something, did you have to move the taps for the washing machine from its original place to new place or the washing machine in new place is sharing the water inlet from the sink inlet (not sure if that is even possible) ?

I am asking this because I cannot see new taps in your shared pictures.

And, I have very similar situation, where I might need to relocate taps.

And how did you go about placing the sink on the benchtop ? Can this be done perfectly with some precautions and what tools are handy for creating hole for the sink ?

Hi @Sugar,

Hopefully, @goofygaffney can answer your question, but typically, if you had a sink and washing machine in such close proximity, you'd just use the same water inlet for both supplies. Your supplies are mounted above the benchtop, so for aesthetic reasons, it would be best to have a plumber relocate them to under the benchtop.

With care, it's certainly possible to install your sink into a timber benchtop. You'll need a jigsaw to cut the hole for the sink and a drill driver and a drillbit to start the cut. Check out this helpful guide: How to install a laundry benchtop.

Hi @Sugar ..thanks the laundry is still a perfect design for us ..yes my husband capped the taps on the south wall and took the pipes around to the west to service the sink (the gooseneck tap is over the sink) and then the same cold water pipe also goes to the washing machine on the same wall.

The laminate benchtops we bought in a single long length and my husband cut the sink hole with a jigsaw..there is a lip on the sink so it is forgiving but keep it as tight as possible ..all the best with your renovation and thanks for your feedback
