How to attach small pergola to metal fascia

You won't be attaching the pergola to the fascia you are attaching it to the rafters behind the fascia. The fixings do go through the fascia but the rafters are the structural timbers that support the pergola. You'll need to work out where the rafters are located.

You might need to remove fascia and/or guttering and install noggins from rafter to rafter hard up against the back of the fascia. You would then screw/bolt the waling plate through the metal fascia into the noggins.

If you take some images of the attachment point our helpful members might be able to provide additional solutions.

yes, you are right. I need to attach to rafters. So my question to you and the other members is easy way to find rafter location behind metal fascia.. so that my screws from front timber can go to roof rafters behind colourblind metal fascia..

You could use a stud detector on the eave lining underneath the roof to give you a general idea of their location. The issue is determining where they finish and the length of fixings needed to go through the fascia and into them. The rafters don't always finish directly behind the fascia. Without removing the fascia it would be difficult to get an idea of what you are fixing into.

I am not aware of any step-by-step guides on removing metal fascia and/or how to put it back together again. You'll most likely find the corners of the fascia have been pop-riveted together and the rivets need to be drilled out.

You might like to remove a tile to get an idea of what is going on underneath. There could be a sarking layer that would prevent you from viewing the rafters unless it is cut. It's not a great idea to cut the sarking layer unless you are going to repair it with a suitable tape like Ametalin 48mm x 50m Insulation And Ducting Tape afterwards.

Gday mate,

Im currently doing this. I used the brackets in the photo. Take some tiles off your roof where your trusses are, attach an additional 90x45 piece up the truss and attach this bracket with M10 bolts. If you use a drill with a 6mm bit you can drill the holes in the fascia for the bracket to then come through.

You then attach the pergola to this bracket. It seems hard but once you do the first one you’ll be fine. I had to do 12 for the length of my pergola.

This was also recommended by my council as I got a permit and they advised this way of doing it.

Hi Eric, thank you. I am actually looking at making an awning, such as to go over this scooter. It seems to me like it should be a simple thing to attach 1m of colorbond steel off the end of the roof, out from under the gutter. I was surprised to not find some sort of steel bracket solution (like for a shelf) coming off the wall. Seems the normal practice is to use a post down to the ground?

Thank you for responding back so quickly. The Dunnings 22° Galvanised Extended Fascia Bracket should be ideal for your project. This is on the condition that you mount it to the rafters of your roof. It should be strong enough for you to build your covered area.

This discussion is about connecting a pergola to a house. Any structure connecting to a house needs to comply with building codes, and the reason for needing to remove the fascia is to locate the structural members. You're not looking to connect a large structure to a house, so the advice presented here isn't particularly relevant.

On what sort of scale would you like to grow this vine? If it's only a smaller vine, then you could likely get away with connecting the lines directly to the fascia. However, the fascia is not designed to bear weight, so I wouldn't go growing a giant vine.

Behind the fascia on a timber-framed house, there will be timber, and you might be able to reach it with long screws. Your best bet might be to screw a length of timber onto the front of the fascia, fixing it in several locations to the timber behind. This will allow you to position your eyelet screws where you wish. It will future-proof your installation if your vine grows quite large, and you'll have confidence in knowing the fascia board won't be pulled off the house by its weight.

Alternatively, if you look at your eave boards, you might see rows of clout nails. These indicate the positions of timber behind, and you could fix your eyelets directly into them and just behind the fascia. Or, if those positions don't suit, attach the timber mentioned previously across the area.

The size of timber you'll be fastening to the brackets depends on the size of the pergola and how much weight the timber is bearing. The same rules apply to building a gazebo or standalone structure. The timber is essentially one side of the structure and must be capable of supporting the weight of the rafters and roofing.

For a smaller-sized pergola, you might be looking at something like 138 x 42mm 3.6m F7 H3 Treated Pine Primed LOSP, or for something of a larger size, 185 x 42mm 3.6m F7 H3 Treated Pine Primed LOSP. As mentioned, it comes down to how you design the pergola. I suggest you start planning the pergola like a standalone structure. Timber span tables and the size of the pergola will determine the correct timber to use.

It looks like you'd be in the ballpark of 138 x 42mm 3.6m F7 H3 Treated Pine Primed LOSP, @calccom21. A V-shaped roof would be considerably more challenging to construct than a flat roof. You might like to have some plans drafted up by a professional.

Sorry another question with the extended fascia bracket - do I just slot it behind the aluminium fascia cover or I need to cut it so it slot in it?

You'll likely need to cut a slot in the fascia to slip the bracket through, @calccom21. You'll then need to access the ceiling cavity to screw the bracket into the roof timber.

Thanks Trent. Great work and makes it easier reading and seeing the photos. Question. On your earlier post you had the rafter brace. Did you have to cut into the metal facia plate? Do you have any close up photos? Sorry. Just want to confirm and get it right. Last one I did was easy. It was to a wooden facia but this house. OMG give me metal. And I can build anyone a race car. Give me wood and I am screwed. Haha.

If the metal fascia is hard against a timber member, you could drill through the fascia and install the fascia bracket. However, if there is an air gap between the metal fascia and the timber member, you'd need to remove the fascia and install the fascia brackets directly onto the timber. You'd then cut segments out of the fascia and re-install it over the brackets.
