How to fill gap between roof and brick wall?

Hi all,

I am looking for your advice to deal with the gap in our house.

As uploaded a photo, there is quite big gap between roof and brick wall.

I am seriously worried about the possibility that birds, rats or anything can get in there as it is big enough.

Could you please help me how I can fix/fill the gap by myself? Otherwise, do I need to call a expert/handyman for this issue?

Any advice appreciated!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's fabulous to have you join us and thank you for sharing your question about covering a gap in your brick wall.

I suggest measuring the gap and using those measurements to cut a piece of timber that will temporarily cover that hole. Possibly a square looking piece. I then propose using Zenith 20mm Zinc Plated Angle Brackets - 4 Pack to secure it to the edge of the timber fascia of your roof.

If you have some leftover paint in the same colour as the brick or roof fascia, I suggest painting it as soon as you can, as leaving it unpainted will cause it to bend and warp.

The ideal way to repair it is to use timber that is treated and that will last a long time. A good example would be 90 x 45mm Outdoor Framing MGP10 H3 Treated Pine 2.4m or 90 x 22mm Decking H3 Treated Pine L/M. This is on the condition that the sizes are applicable to the gap in your wall.

Hi @EunJiKim, another alternative to @EricL 's suggestion could be (having not seen the actual situation) to remove that cut piece of side facia and replace it with a longer piece that extends further back over the bricks, including over the missing brick. It would only be nailed up to where the timber is, but as it would only be another 1/2 brick longer it would stay in place, as well as sealing up the hole. You'd need to cut it to shape of course.

Just a Saturday doodle - but create a wooden 'plug' that fits in place and screwed onto position. It would require you to ascend a ladder with cardboard and cut the hole profile so that it fits nicely. Cut the wood to the profile and glue/nail/screw a second piece that fits the area with a more pleasing bevel angle.

Just had another thought....

Why not look around some building sites in your area to see if they are using the same brick, then ask if you can take a half brick. There's likely plenty of pieces with broken edges in the skip bin. Then, remove the side facia for ease of access and with a bit of mortar (you can even buy it in tubes, which would be ok as this isn't a structural issue) fit the brick into the hole, broken edge facing into the facia area. It won't be seen when you refit the facia.

I was wondering if you have any other photos of the eve, Something looks a little odd with it (As in that last section appears to be at more of an angle but your roof line looks straight? Maybe its just the way I am looking at it?

My thought before scrolling through the suggestions came very close to @TedBear 's. Any chance you have a spare brick around? If not you could try some brick suppliers to find a matching colour. The cover strip for the eve should be able to be removed possibly with a claw hammer and then as Tedbear suggest your new brick mortared in place.

Cover the hole works as well, or you could run a new side strip down the rooofline to cover the hole and also join that last section? (It has me puzzled)
