A bed headboard is both practical furniture and an opportunity to add a stylish feature to your bedroom.
Bunnings Workshop members have used many different creative materials for headboards, including old doors and kitchen cupboards.
Here are 10 ways to build a bed headboard.
1. Use timber
The easiest way to approach a bedhead project is to use timber, especially if you have wood leftover from other projects. Bunnings Workshop member @monlew used recycled timber for a pallet wood bedhead, while @marikaknows used new timber that cost less than $100 for her custom king-sized bedhead. @WoodenGregsWood also made a budget D.I.Y. bed with headboard using Pine and recycled slats.
2. Utilise dowel to upcycle an old headboard
Give an old headboard a fresh new look with a simple makeover. Community member @Winnie10 used half-round dowel secured to an old headboard with construction adhesive for her upcycled bedhead.
3. Add upholstery
Want a touch of luxury or a soft spot to lean against? Upholstered headboards are stylish and practical. The hanging upholstered bedhead by @annatr was created using Plywood, foam, calico and velvet, while @H3nna also used Plywood, foam and fabric to create a D.I.Y. curved bedhead.
4. Recycle old blinds
Even the most unlikely materials can be used for a bedhead. Creative member @tisha used leftover timber blinds painted black for her bedhead using scrap timber blinds.
5. Create a feature with VJ panels
You can frame your bed with texture and style using VJ paneling. @craftyhopper used VJ panelling painted in Yacht Race and Rubble by Porter's Paints with a white shelf in her VJ paneling bedroom makeover, while @EleventhCoastal created a feature wall bedhead in her Nib wall bedhead with VJ panels project.
6. Upcycle an old door
Doors are practically ready-made headboards - solid, perfect sized, and often have great detailing. @KellieN used a new internal door from Bunnings in her project from door to bedhead.
7. Convert an old privacy screen
A privacy screen can also be upcycled to create a unique bedroom feature. @Lee19 bought a broken panel and transformed their bedroom: privacy screen turned into a bedhead.
8. Use garden webbing
Create a weaved fabric headboard using plant tie jute webbing. Taking inspiration from the Bunnings magazine, @Nellstar created a simple frame and used 20m of hessian garden webbing and a staple gun in a D.I.Y. garden webbing headboard project.
9. Repurpose old kitchen cupboards
You can even make a headboard from old kitchen cupboards. Self-taught passionate upcycler @AnitaH25 fashioned a Unique headboard using old kitchen cupboards by sanding the timber and adding extra support.
10. Have fun with perspex
Perspex is an underrated and underused D.I.Y material. @Peggers used perspex to showcase open books and lighting in his 4-poster bed project, but almost anything you love could be featured in a customised bedhead.
